An article on the efficacy of tales and fables in psychotherapy
Peseschkian uses stories in therapy to draw a parallel between the individual's experience and that of the protagonist of the story.
Peseschkian describes the case of a 41-year-old patient, an academician suffering from myriad physical symptoms, who came to him "crying and trembling".
Peseschkian told him this story, not to give him "advice or show him a solution, but to lead him away from his intense and endless brooding".

It was his discovery that through the use of stories and tales and other examples from different cultures, the patient is enabled to broaden his perspective to help him see his situation or conflict from another viewpoint.
Dr Peseschkian is also responsible for the challenging idea that while disorders and conflicts may exist within a family (or person/society) the family also brings the capacity for dealing with those conflicts itself.
