The existence of prime time in the United States is largely an artifact of now repealed regulations of the Federal Communications Commission which limited the number of hours that a network can require its affiliates to broadcast.

If player and team are unable to work out a satisfactory contract arrangement in that window of opportunity then the player has the option of returning to school.

However for me the time it jumped for good was the time that Michael Palin and John Cleese came on and did the Dead Parrot sketch, line for line from the original.
The last time SNL was truly funny was during the 2000 Presidential Election Mess (I won't say who was trying to steal the election [The Democrats] but you knew it would make for great comedy.) The Skits with Wil Ferrell and Darrell Hammond as Bush, Gore, Clinton, etc. were hysterical.
By the 8th time in a row the two are purposely dumping the skit and just laughing and 'ad-libbing' and 'losing it' through each and every skit - even ruining ones that may have worked otherwise.

After their death, it seems now that the show has somehow turned from decent to horrible, that is in 1999, the year that brought us all of the most non-talent comedians with a special guests of overrated actors/actress and a bunch of MTV no-talent singers.
The current cast may not be the all time best, but if this show ever jumped it saved itself with the ultimate, awe-inspiring crowd-pleasingest give-the-people-what-they-want reverse jump of all time on this years season finale when Jimmy Fallon announced his retirement from show business.
And as for the bad seasons, the first time (80-81) we were saved by Murphy and Piscopo(who were in that said season, but got more airtime in the next one), the second time (85-86) we were saved by Dana Carvey, and the third time (94-95) we were saved by Will Ferrell and Darrell Hammond.
