And expecting his American wife and child to relocate to the very anti-american Iran and to expect Betty to be happy exposing her child to living in a war zone and being raised in an oppressive regime was ridiculous.
Any society that holds a woman at loaded gunpoint in front of her young daughter for having a scarf slip is not one that a mother would feel safe raising a child within.

Ought to be required reading for any woman foolish enough to think she can marry a "handsome, exotic-looking man with an accent" and live happily ever after (especially if living in his country and with his family).
Betty Mahmoody's 25-year crusade to warn others and to help women who made the same mistakes she did are a testament to authenticity of the facts in "Not Without My Daughter".
