The Smallest Show on Earth is a 1957 British film, directed by Basil Dearden, and starring Bill Travers, Virginia McKenna, Peter Sellers, Margaret Rutherford, Bernard Miles, Leslie Phillips, Francis De Wolff, George Cross, June Cunningham and Sid James.
The Smallest Show on Earth has a reputation as a generally well-regarded British comedy and this is because of the character performances of Rutherford, Sellers and Miles as the three old eccentrics; but of the three, only Rutherford (named Mrs.

Maybe it's just conditioning: three classes in film studies as an undergrad, and two years in a graduate program where I was force-fed Kenneth Burke and Roland Barthes have left me unable to watch a movie without analyzing it and searching for thematic relevance.
Considering the low budget on the film, the effects are as good as anything featured in any of the bigger-budgeted studio films of the fifties.
As it is, KRONOS is one of the few SF films of the era in which nuclear weapons are shown to only to be virtually impotent in dealing with the menace, but only make it stronger.

Jailhouse Rock (1957) is generally acknowledged as his most famous and popular film, but he also appeared in Loving You (1957) (noted for his first screen kiss) and in director Michael Curtiz' King Creole (1958) as a New Orleans teen rebel (acclaimed as one of his best acting roles) before the decade ended.
By the 70s, his film roles had deteriorated, and although he returned to stage performances and revived his singing career, he was physically on the decline until his death in August, 1977 of heart disease and drug abuse.

The basic premise of the film is that an alien race has fallen victim to a terrible disease on their homeworld, and they are dying off at an alarming rate.
Their best scientists have so far been unable to come up with anything to stop the spread of the disease, and time is growing short for their world, as the population rapidly dwindles.
There's no real stand out performances in the film, but when the script is as poor as this one, it's always going to be a challenge for the actors to pull anything out of it.
