University Park Campus to the west of the city centre, is the original and principal campus of the University and is widely regarded as one of the most attractive in the country.
The university is also strong in the humanities and social sciences, and in the same year that Sir Peter Mansfield won his Nobel Prize, Professor Clive Granger, who was at the university for 22 years as a student and academic, also won the Bank of Sweden Prize in Economic Sciences in Memory of Alfred Nobel.
The University, however, claimed that its actions were in line with its undertakings in respect of the national agreement and that the University had sought to negotiate with the AUT from the start.

UVa, Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University ("Virginia Tech"), and the College of William and Mary are currently undergoing a Charter initiative that would enable these institutions to run themselves more independently in the face of continued budget cutbacks in the state's General Assembly.
The Lawn and the Rotunda were the model for many "green areas" at universities across the country (including the East Campus of Duke University and Killian Court at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, founded by William Barton Rogers, former professor at the University of Virginia).

 Radford University Alumni Affairs -- RU History
During the mid- and late-1930s, Radford's dedication to the advancement of education in Virginia continued with participation in the "Virginia New Curriculum." Progressive educational ideas and programs were instituted at the McGuffey training school, bringing teachers, supervisors, and education officials from across the state to Radford.
In 1943 a merger was proposed between Radford and nearby Virginia Polytechnic Institute as part of a statewide effort to consolidate higher education institutions and give students the most adequate opportunity for a broad professional and technical education.
Radford University continues to evolve as an institution to meet the changing needs of society, retaining its commitment to students and their education.

 Claude Akins: Alumni Exhibit: Northwestern University Archives
Akins made his professional debut at the Barter Theater in Abingdon, Virginia, after which he went to New York City and won a role in "The Rose Tattoo" with Eli Wallach and Maureen Stapleton.
His first film appearance was in 1953 in "From Here to Eternity" and he also had roles in "Rio Bravo," with John Wayne and "How the West Was Won." Akins was noted for his ability to project a familiar, genial style in his roles.
