Computer virus - Biocrawler   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-04)
Unlike biological viruses, computer viruses do not simply evolve by themselves, except in the cases where copying errors and recombination have led to actual evolution of computer viruses; however, these cases are very rare compared to the rapid generation of new malware by human programmers.
Anti-virus software can detect it by decrypting the viruses using an emulator, or by statistical pattern analysis of the encrypted virus body.
They work by examining the contents of the computers memory (its RAM, and boot sector) and the files stored on fixed or removable drives (hard drives, floppy drives), and comparing those files against a database of known virus "signatures".

 Computer insecurity (Linux Reviews)
Because computer systems can be very complex, and cannot be guaranteed to be free of defects, this security stance tends to produce insecure systems.
Malicious individuals have regularly penetrated well-designed, secure computer systems by taking advantage of the carelessness of trusted individuals, or by deliberately deceiving them, for example sending messages that they are the system administrator and asking for passwords.

 Viruses and Bacteriophages
Viruses, including both the viruses of eukaryotic cells and the bacteriophages of bacteria and archaea, have long served as experimental tools for prying out the deepest biological secrets of their cellular hosts.
Viruses of both the eukaryotic and prokaryotic persuasions provide marvelous opportunities, once we understand how they work, for manipulating or modifying their hosts, as for example in gene therapy, disease detection, and other biotechnological applications.
Notable features include several conformational and covalent transitions in the head subunit as it moves through the pathway.

Viruses can be divided into two types, on the basis of their behaviour when they get executed.
Non-resident viruses immediately search for other hosts that can be infected, infect these targets, and finally transfer control to the application program they infected.
Resident viruses contain a replication module that is similar to the one that is employed by non-resident viruses.

Viruses, Worms and Trojans have been with us for many years, but rarely did one show up in one of our clients' systems.

While a few actual viruses may have surfaced on the old mainframe-based networks, it took the widespread use of personal computers in the '80s to provide the fertile ground from which the first major viruses sprung, spreading via floppy disk or bulletin board system download.
E-mail viruses (or "worms", if you prefer) were the subject of users' panic and worry long before they existed in reality.
Several notable virus hoaxes went around in the mid '90s, such as the one that claimed that if you got a message with the subject "Good Times", then merely opening it in your mail reader would cause disastrous consequences to your computer.
