Notchback - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia (via CobWeb/3.1 planetlab2.cs.unc.edu)   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-03)
Notchback is a very common form of car body style characterized by a sharp vertical drop-off from roof to trunk, as opposed to hatchback or fastback.
The notchback is usually a synonym for sedan, although many coupé cars are notchbacks as well.
Notchback can also refer to liftback or hatchback vehicles, if there is a discontinuous line from roof to rear fender.

I had always loved the retro shape of the notchback sedan, even better than the fastback, and have always intended to restore it, but have never got around to it.
This is a strange car in many respects, as it is air cooled, rear mounted engine, has front and rear boots (trunks), has swing axles, fuel filler is under the bonnet (hood), oil filled air filter, wiper washer works off a hose line to the spare wheel.
Replacement floorpans are available in fibreglass and steel for a small charge.

Ultra VW - Feature: Lowriding '65 notchback
While discussing the topic with his good friend, Marvin Lee (owner of the Fridolin and Notchback featured in the April 2004 issue), it wasn’t too long before the unfinished ’65 Notchback in Marvin’s workshop became the main topic of conversation.
Marvin had found the car in Illinois, way back in ’94 yet, despite having sourced many rare parts and panels – and even managing to get the ’shell and panels primed and painted – the project had never been completed.
(Incidentally, the Notchback was never officially imported into the USA, thereby making this quite a rare vehicle today.) Modified Type 3 cowl vents were fitted, along with a genuine DDS gear lever, a Speedwell steering wheel and even a pair of incredibly rare Albert mirrors, designed specifically for the Type 3.
