		In Germany Notgeld was used for instance in the towns of Mansfeld in Thuringia (1622), Kolberg (1807) - besieged by the French Napoleonic army - and Erfurt (1813) — in French occupation besieged by the Prussian army.
		Non-German issues of Notgeld are known from the Baltic region of Russia (from 1813).
		Notgeld was mostly valid as a means of payment only for a limited period and in a specific region.

		The first notgeld note of the 20th century was presumably issued in Bremen on July, 31st, 1914, even before the beginning of the WW I. There followed an unbelievable number of others in a very short time, so that even today we don´t know the exact number.
		The issues of notgeld seemed to be without any limits and the efforts of the Reichsbank to produce enough coins and notes were successful at last.
		Notgeld not any longer was issued in marks but in dollars or in gold mark.

		As individuals began hoarding money, local governments and private businesses were forced to introduce short-term certficates to make up for the shortage of small change.
		Issuance occurred not only in Germany, but also in Austria-Hungary, Belgium, France, Russia, Poland, etc. There was a break in the wave of issues in Germany at the end of 1914.
