Another fort was established on the Nothe to protect the bay and the mouth of the harbour.
Platforms for artillery were set up in both forts and further earthworks were erected at the northern entrance to Melcombe Regis, with another one a little to the North of the junction of St. Thomas Street and Lower Bond Street (Conygar Lane as it was then called) extending westwards possibly to the Backwater.
Within an hour the parliamentarians had recaptured Chapel Fort and Old Weymouth with the loss of only one man. Since the Nothe Fort and Bincleves Fort were still in Royalist hands a further two days of bombardment ensued as the Royalist and Parliamentarians fired at both towns.

The Fort is built at the head of the Nothe Penisula which forms one side of Weymouth Harbour and overlooks Portland Harbour to the south.
This is the Caponier, a small fort in its own right, from which infantry might engage an enemy attempting to assault the gate, with its defended barbican above, or to scale the massive escarpment wall of the Fort.
The Fort has some 70 rooms over half of which contain displays which tell the exciting story of the Nothe Peninsula and the Fort, how and why it was built, the soldiers who lived in it and its guns.

Nothe Fort lies to the east of Weymouth.
The fort was built by the 26 Company of the Royal Engineers between 1860 and 1872, on a peninsular which juts out into the sea north of Portland Harbour.
The Nothe had a range of bomb proof vaulted rooms within its walls, and was originally equipped with a mixture of Rifle Muzzle Loading cannons, later in 1888 these were replaced with seven 38 ton 12.5 inch RML's.

The final event for the PAV at Fort Nelson is the Christmas event to be held on Sunday December 17th.
Spitbank Fort has recently been taken over by a group of three local businessmen and they are keen to continue opening the fort on Sudays for visitors to enjoy a sunday Lunch and take a tour of the fort.
Fort Glanville's 10 inch 20 Ton R.M.L. is now fully restored thanks to Frank Garie who is a Fort Glanville Historical Association Member, who has spent many hundreds of hours restoring the 20 ton Armstrong gun and It's Mechanical Loading System.

The inner Breakwater Fort is considered a weak one, but that at the extremity of the outer arm is strong.

 Palmerston Forts Society
The Palmerston Forts Society was formed in 1984 by a group of people enthusiastic about the Victorian fortifications of Portsmouth - which include of course, the Forts on Portsdown Hill, Portsmouth.
These, together with the forts surrounding Plymouth, Pembroke, Portland, Dover, Chatham, Medway, and other lesser fortresses, were built on the recommendation of a Royal Commission which reported in 1860.
Social events will be another attraction for members.The Society acts as a forum for research on the Victorian Fortifications of the Portsmouth and Solent area and the U.K. A journal is published three times a year.

 Nothe Fort bids for £1.5m lottery cash
WEYMOUTH'S Nothe Fort is to submit a second bid for lottery funds to try to raise £1.5 million to save the historic site from falling into the sea.
The fort's original £2 million bid in 1999 was turned down by lottery bosses but it gained a sympathetic response and encouragement to try again.
He added that the original bid had included estimates for hauling away hundreds of thousands of tons of earth which had been dumped against the fort's walls at the turn of the century.

From 1875 the main armament at Landguard was a casemated battery of rifled, muzzle loading guns.
The guns were fired electrically by a gunnery officer from the roof of the Fort.

The garrison in Chapel fort is attacked and the men from Nothe fort came out to join the fierce fighting.
Many of the original conspirators are hanged at a gallows on the Nothe headland.
