Nothobranchius   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-04)
Nothobranchius species are known from: northeastern South Africa, Caprivi Strip (Namibia), Zambia, southeastern Congo (DRC), southeastern Zimbabwe, Malawi, Mozambique, Tanzania, Kenya, Uganda, Somalia, southwestern Ethiopia, southern Sudan and in the vicinity of Lake Chad in Chad and northern Cameroon.
Typically, Nothobranchius habitats are situated on flat-lying floodplain areas and all have one thing in common - they dry completely or, in some cases, partially, on an annual or semi-annual basis, depending on the rainfall characteristics of the particular region.
With the onset of the rainy season, the mud in the Nothobranchius habitats is moistened, the eggs therein are triggered into the final stage of development (by the change in environmental conditions) so that when the rains come in earnest and the pools fill up with water, the eggs hatch and a new generation begins.

Nothobranchius guentheri also known as "Guenther's Nothobranch Killifish", "Güenther's Notho", "Guenther's Notho", and "Guenther's Killifish" is a popular killifish among experience and novice hobbyists alike.
Nothobranchius guentheri has a reputation for aggressiveness towards its own kind, and for this reason it may be best not to house it with others of the same species.
Nothobranchius guentheri is from Zanzibar in East Africa.

Nothobranchius are classified as “annuals” because they do not live more than one annual cycle in nature.
These observations seem to further imply that those Nothobranchius whose primary caudal colors are blue or green should be found in clear water, but I have not seen a study confirming this implication.
To the Nothobranchius breeder wishing to accelerate the "dry" time, this knowledge was exemplified by the practice of storing eggs on shelves near the ceiling, near a heat source, or in temperature-controlled storage containers such as "warm boxes" and more elaborate incubators.

 LAY LINE GENOMICS
Annual fishes of the genus Nothobranchius are a group of teleost fishes which successfully colonized seasonal ponds  by producing desiccation-resistant eggs which survive the dry season.
The short lifespan in Nothobranchius furzeri is the secondary consequence of a biological adaptation for accelerated life cycle and not the result of spontaneous or targeted mutations which impair cellular repair as it is the case for the many short-lived mouse mutants that have been generated recently.
Nothobranchius furzeri expresses a series of aging biomarkers at level of histology and behaviour which are typical of vertebrate aging.

Scientists are using killifish from the Nothobranchius genus to study the effects of aging.
According to a paper in the latest issue of the journal Aging Cell, Nothobranchius can be used to test the effects of aging at a pace comparable to that seen with other model organisms such as the fruit fly, Drosophila.
Nothobranchius come from Africa and are an annual species in the wild.

The species is also supposedly unique because the females as the males have vertical fl stripes on the body, only the females typically only have them on the tail half of the body.
It is a good idea to separate the males from the females as soon as they can be told apart while they are growing up, or the males will be too dominant towards the females.
With species from the Nothobranchius genera it is normally quite easy to sex the young: those that get colures are males.

The aspect of polymorphism has thus far received very little attention [in Wildekamp's 1986 study, measurements were taken from different size and age groups], besides from the fact that little is mentioned concerning the sub-species N.jubbi interruptus.
Although not investigated thus far, it would appear that in Nothobranchius the red colour must, in one way or the other, be directly linked to aggressive and territorial behaviour, and thus to spawning success.
In these two species, the red and non-red forms maintain however an identical body shape, which is imprinted in the species' specific gene pool.

Extremely Short Lifespan In The Annual Fish Nothobranchius Furzeri   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-04)
Abstract: We have studied the fish, Nothobranchius furzeri, a member of a group of annual species found in temporary bodies of water of equatorial Africa whose life expectancy in the wild is limited to a few months.
To survive the dry season, fishes of the genus Nothobranchius lay eggs that remain encased in the bottom mud until the next seasonal rains.
We found that these small fishes, even when reared in the laboratory, complete their life cycle in two months and a half and then die due to senescence.

Aging changes in lymphopoietic and myelopoietic organs of the annual cyprinodont fish, Nothobranchius guentheri.   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-04)
The thymus of aging annual, cyprinodont fish, Nothobranchius guentheri and Cynolebias adloffi begins to undergo senescent changes at approximately four months.
At this time, the histopathology reveals increased amounts of connective tissue, epithelial cysts and myoid cells, but decreased numbers of thymocytes.
It is of interest that development of these tumors occurs during peak senescent changes in the thymus, supporting the view that as fish age, accompanied by atrophy of the thymus, the immune system is less vigorous and there is an increase in the incidence of cancer.
