The latter could have been the “thorns' that suffocated the grain in Jesus' parable (Matthew 13:7).

Our walks (graded easy to medium at six to 12km a day - less than four to seven-and-a-half miles) took us up rugged slopes and down them, through villages, along coastal pathways and into caves.
By the end of the week I had taken photographs of an extraordinary Black Dragon Lily (Dracunculus vulgaris) - a lethal-looking flower with a fl spike protruding from a petal sheath (which one of our party observed was for catching flies) and the thistle-like blooms of the Notobasis syriaca.
I saw fig and walnut trees, wild artichokes and sea squill bulbs, carob trees and prickly pear, as well as an unidentified plant that looked like a giant asparagus.

Some steppic communities are however, climatic and semi-climatic, for example, those dominated by Esparto Grass (Lygeum spartum) which develop on clay slopes.
The more degraded steppes are characterised by Common Awn-grass (Stipa capensis), Aegilops (Aegilops geniculata) and a variety of thistles such as Horse Thistle (Notobasis syriaca), Mediterranean Thistle (Galactites tomentosa) and geophytes such as Ashpodel (Asphodelus aestivus) Sea Squill (Urginea pancration) and Sicilian Squill (Scilla sicula).
Other steppic communities may also develop on abandoned agricultural land.
