 Introduction to Branchiopoda
The Branchiopoda consist of four living groups: the Anostraca ("fairy shrimp" or "sea monkeys"), Notostraca ("tadpole shrimp"), Cladocera ("water fleas"), and Conchostraca ("clam shrimp').
The Notostraca are called "tadpole shrimp" because of their broad, plate-like carapace and narrow, elongate thorax/abdomen.
A fossil group often paired with the Notostraca are the Kazacharthra, found only in Jurassic rocks of Kazachstan, a country that neighbors Afganistan.

Notostraca - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The order Notostraca (colloquially referred to as notostracans, called Triops, tadpole shrimp or shield shrimp) are small crustaceans in the class Branchiopoda.
Triops have two internal compound eyes and one naupliar eye in-between, a flattened carapace covering its head and leg-bearing segments of the body.

It is peculiar to Notostraca that each segment may bear more than one pair of legs.
Notostraca have been found in a variety of habitats including temporary rain-pools, slightly salty lakes, freshwater lakes, farm dams, drainage ditches and the like.
Notostraca are found on all continents except Antarctica, and in most climates where ephemeral pools occur.

The Notostraca are placed with the orders Conchostraca, Anostraca and Cladocera in the Branchiopoda.
Notostraca are distinguished from other Branchiopoda by the dominance of the carapace development, which is broad, shield-like and although attached only to the head, covers the head, thorax and much of the abdomen.
The paired compound eyes are on the anterior carapace (head), the first antennae are single-branched and unsegmented.

Molecular characterization of ribosomal intergenic spacer in the tadpole shrimp Triops cancriformis (Crustacea, Branchiopoda, Notostraca)
The structure and variability of the IGS region are analyzed here in hermaphroditic and parthenogenetic populations of the "living fossil" Triops cancriformis (Branchiopoda, Notostraca).
The results indicate the presence of concerted evolution at the population level for this G+C-rich IGS region as a whole, with the major amount of genetic variability found outside the subrepeat region.

Examples are the mantis shrimp and the opposum or mysid shrimp, both of which belong to the same class (Malacostraca) as the true shrimp, but constitute two different orders within it, the Stomatopoda and the Mysidacea.
Triops longicaudatus or Triops cancriformis are also popular animals in freshwater aquaria, and are often called shrimp, although they belong instead to the Notostraca, a quite unrelated group.
Shrimp are distinguished from the superficially similar prawns by the structure of the gills, and by the fact that female shrimp (as in all other pleocyemates) brood the eggs on their pleopods.

Fauna Ibérica | Fauna Iberica: Volumen 7 - Crustacea Branchiopoda
In this monograph of Iberian Fauna a revision of the class Branchiopoda in the Iberian-Balearic range is presented.
In accordance with the latest trends in the classification of Crustacea, the class Branchiopoda includes six orders: Anostraca, Spini-caudata (as a part of the previously considered Conchostraca), Clenopoda, Anomopoda and Onychopoda (all three called Cladocera in the past), and Notostraca.
The work was based on the study of more than 2.000 samples for all over the Iberian Balearic area and includes identification keys, very complete original descriptions of native populaitons profusely ilustrated (15 photomicrographies and 181 plates with more than 1500 illustrations) and information on the biology and distribution of 111 species under consideration.

The tadpole shrimps (Phylum: Arthropoda (segmented legs), Subphylum: Crustacea, Class: Branchiopoda, Order: Notostraca) are a group of crustaceans that originated millions of years ago during the Cambrian era.
These crustaceans have remained virtually unchanged for this time and remain so today.
