Anostracans, often associated with notostracans, can also be a considerable part of their prey (especially when weak or dying).
In Austria, two notostracan species (one spring species and one summer species) are documented: Lepidurus apus and Triops cancriformis.
Notostracans are often sold to children in small packets as eggs as an interesting science project or as a beginner's kit for their first aquarium.

 Lander University | Triops
Notostracans differ from anostracans primarily in having a carapace (noto=back, ostrac=shell), sessile compound eyes, and appendages posterior to the genital segments.
As is true of anostracans, it is difficult to draw exact homologies between the parts of the notostracan limb and that of the ancestral limb.
The feeding method of notostracans is similar to that proposed for the ancestral crustacean.

Curious Minds - Articles - Biology & Life - Notostraca (Triops)
Notostracans (often just called Triops, tadpole shrimp or shield shrimp) are small crustaceans, that are in the Branchiopoda group.
Notostracans sometimes even cannibalize freshly moulted members of the same species.
In Austria, two notostracan species (one spring species and one summer species) were documented: Lepidurus apus (Linnaeus, 1758), Triops cancriformis (Bosc, 1801).

Shrimp - the large food & drink encyclopedia
Freshwater shrimp available for aquaria include the Japanese marsh shrimp (Caridina japonica) and ghost or glass shrimps (Palaeomonetes sp.) Popular saltwater shrimp include the cleaner shrimp (Lysmata amboinensis), the fire shrimp (Lysmata debelius) and the harlequin shrimp (Hymenocera picta).
Other more recent and unusual, but very popular freshwater shrimp suitable for Aquariums are Triops longicaudatus or Triops cancriformis (notostracans).
People that catch shrimp are 'shrimpers', and the act of catching shrimp is called 'shrimping'.

 Notostraca species overview - WikiStuff
The second major problem with making any definitive statements on the notostracan species is that modern genetic analysis is calling even the agreed species classifications into question.
With the exception of a few distinct characters such as the supra anal plate on the telson of Lepidurus species, or the presence or absence of the second maxilla amongst various species, their gross anatomy is pretty much the same across the board.
Not only is there the obvious morphological difference of the supra anal plate, life cycle, general body conformation, chromosome number and genetic analysis indicate these two genera have been separate for much of the triops' history on Earth.

It is presumed that the Kazacharthrids lived much like their living relatives, in that they were opportunistic omnivores that fed on any available food, from bacterial biofilms to detrius to smaller animals that could be overpowered (i.e., fairy shrimp, small or recently hatched amphibian larvae, smaller members of the same species, etc).
Fossil evidence suggests that the Kazacharthrans were descended from notostracans that became isolated in bodies of freshwater in Lower Jurassic Kazakhstan.
The Kazacharthrans were distinguished from the tadpole shrimps in the arrangement of the compound eyes, and the presence of an enlarged telson (the final segment of an arthropod's tail).

Eggs can stand desiccation and carry populations across the drying out of their habitats (thus you can by them in vials in fish stores to hatch at home to feed resulting naupliar larvae to your pets).
Notostracans, or tadpole shrimp, are similar to anostracans in their elongate bodies bearing simple phyllopodia, long caudal rami.
An unusual aspect of notostracans is that abdominal segments are fused into a series of ring-like compound segments, which as a result appear to have multiple pairs of appendages.

Tadpole Shrimp - Class Notostraca   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-14)
Notostracans, or tadpole shrimp, have a round, flattened shield that covers their head and body, and a forked tail that sticks out the end.
This tadpole shrimp grows up to 3 cm in length and is found in very temporary ponds, as well as fishless arctic lakes.
The eggs are carried in a special structure on one pair of their abdominal limbs, called a brood pouch.

Notostracans can be found in water bodies ranging from permanent farm dams, ditches etc to very impermanent rain-filled pools, with salinities varying from oligotrophic to modestly saline.

NHMLC PEET Project: What are conchostracans?
All conchostracans have a bivalved carapace, with the two valves joined by a dorsal hinge or fold and attached and manipulated by a strong adductor muscle.
They differ markedly from anostracans and notostracans in their ability to be completely enclosed within the bivalved carapace, and in their correspondingly reduced abdomen.
Generalizations beyond this point are difficult to make, as the families of clam shrimp are morphologically quite diverse.

Chapter 11 - Freshwater Fish And Fish Habitat
The presence of tadpole shrimp (notostracans), which are highly vulnerable to predation, in this upper portion of the indicates that no fish are upstream of the falls.
Notostracans, also known as tadpole shrimp, were found only above these barriers.
As notostracans are normally not found coexisting with predatory fish, their presence supports the assumption that Arctic charr, brook trout or lake trout do not occur in these areas.

 Introduction to Branchiopoda
The Notostraca are called "tadpole shrimp" because of their broad, plate-like carapace and narrow, elongate thorax/abdomen.
When populations are very large, Triops, a well known notostracan, can cause considerable damage to rice paddies by burrowing into the sediment and inadvertantly dislodging the young shoots.
They differ from notostracans by the shape of their carapace, which has elaborate spines on the margin giving them a rather fierce appearance.

The water temperature on 31 October was 17.0 °C, dissolved oxygen was 6.3 mg/L, pH was 6.4, conductivity was 595 µmho/cm, and alkalinity was 108 mg/L. The characteristic habitat of notostracans consists of muddy, alkaline pools which dry completely in the warm months.
This type of intermittent habitat is usually found in arid or steppe regions (1,4).

Hundreds of flat impressions of triopsid head shields and some abdominal remains, caudal rami and intact specimens have been excavated, associated with conchostracans, fish and megafloral remains.
The fossils occur in laminated clayey shale from a 0.5-2 m thick lacustrine bed intercalated in the Coburger Sandstein fluvial channel and floodplain sequence.
Ichnopodichnus ichnofauna, most likely produced by notostracan branchiopods, also occur in the same locality, but not within the notostracian beds.

Independent dorsal and ventral segmentation in a similar manner as in Glomeris, and the independent establishment of the tergites, in theory can lead to any combination of tergites with any number of leg pairs.
If tergite formation and the formation of segments also are not coupled in notostracans, pauropods, and symphylans, this could be the cause for the dorsoventral discrepancies in these arthropods.
We would like to thank Wolfgang Dohle for stimulating discussions on Glomeris segmentation.
