The closely related wolffishes of the family Anarhichadidae, with large, tusklike teeth, are found in arctic Atlantic waters.
They average 3 ft (90 cm) in length and are good food fishes, sold commercially as "ocean catfish." Blennies are classified in the phylum Chordata, subphylum Vertebrata, class Osteichthyes, order Perciformes, families Blenniidae and Nototheniidae.

The total number of digenean species occurring in Nototheniidae in subcontinental waters and off the South Shetland Islands was found to be 21.
The diversity of parasites in the Weddell Sea (11) was similar to those in three other areas, off the South Shetland Islands (12), off Adelie Land (11) and in the Ross Sea (12), but the level of infection in the Weddell Sea was much lower, especially much lower than in the South Shetland Islands area.

 CJO - Abstract
In the Notothenioidei, the adductor mandibulae, the largest and most conspicuous of the cranial muscles, is generally composed of sections A1, A2, A3 and Aw as in the generalized percoids.
The morphology of the adductor mandibulae is similar in most notothenioid families except the Nototheniidae and Bathydraconidae.
The Harpagiferidae and Artedidraconidae share the same apomorphy, the presence of A1[beta], with the Nototheniidae and have no synapomorphies with the Bathydraconidae and Channichthyidae.

The fish resource is dominated by the five families of Nototheniformes which make up threequarters of the fish species in the area.
Of these only two endemic families are of commercial importance: the Nototheniidae (Atlantic Cod) with nine species and the Channichthyidae (Ice Fish) with five species.
There are few pelagic species in the Southern Ocean apart from Myctophidae, the Nototheniidae Pleuragramma antarcticum (Antarctic silverfish) and Dissostichus spp.

Analysis of food contents of 784 stomachs was made in 5 species of fishes of the family Nototheniidae: Notothenia coriiceps neglecta, Notothenia rossi marmorata, Notothenia nudifrons, Trematomus newnesi and Pleuragramma antarcticum.
In the food of the first two of the mentioned species benthic forms predominated and among them Amphipoda were a decidedly preferred component.
The comparison of food composition and the values of the stomach fullness indices in N. coriiceps neglecta, N. rossi marmorata and T. newnesi in the summer and winter seasons shows a markedly higher feeding intensity in the summer.

As water at low temperatures is 1.6 times more oxygenated than water at 20 °C, gas exchanges occur directly through the skin (cutaneous respiration).
Antarctic cods, Nototheniidae, lack swim bladders and have developed another way of achieving buoyancy: their bodies are rich in fat and their skeletons poor in minerals.

Only a few species of Antarctic fishes, most of which inhabit near-bottom waters, occur on a wide-spread scale.
From the investigations that were carried out in 1975-89 from the R/V Profesor Siedlecki, it was determined that 14 species of fish are widespread, all of them belong to two families (Channichthyidae and Nototheniidae).
This paper presents the results of investigations of the distribution of these fish species with respect to the density of their occurrence and identifying sets in particular regions.

Recent studies show that there may be as many species in the Southern Ocean as in the Bering Sea, previously considered an area of highest species diversity and primary center of distribution.
Liparidids are probably the most species-rich family in the Southern Ocean, contrary to the traditional view giving this position to the endemic southern family Nototheniidae.
The most species-rich liparidid genus is Careproctus, which has the broadest depth range of 50 to 7200 m.

Chromosomal studies on ten species of notothenioid fishes (Notothenioidei: Bathydraconidae, Channichthyidae, Nototheniidae)
The results of a cytogenetic study conducted with banding and in situ hybridization techniques using ribosomal and telomeric probes on various species belonging to three families (Bathydraconidae, Channichthyidae and Nototheniidae) of the perciform suborder, Notothenioidei, are reported.
The heterochromatin distribution and composition, nucleolar organiser and localisation of telomeric sequences seem to indicate that both in karyologically conservative families such as channichthyids and in families exhibiting greater karyological variability, certain DNA fractions like ribosomal genes and centromeric and telomeric DNAs are prone to some variability.
