Convent to bring spirit back to chapel | The Guardian | Guardian Unlimited
It has been likened to a surreal Noah's ark: a bizarre, curving chapel created by the legendary Swiss-French architect Le Corbusier and acclaimed as one of the most important buildings of the 20th Century.
But the Notre Dame du Haut pilgrimage chapel, perched on a hill near the French village of Ronchamp, is in danger of being overrun by tourists.
Notre Dame du Haut, the most visited Le Corbusier building in France, is central to the Unesco bid.

Le Corbusier used one of the strangest, but also one of the most sculptural forms it is possible to imagine.
The coloured glass in the openings causes a play of light which unburdens the concrete weight of the wall, rendering it airy and spacious.

 ArchitectureWeek - Culture - Postcard from Ronchamp - 2003.0521
The architectural highlight of our bicycle ride across France was visiting the Notre Dame du Haut chapel, a steep climb from the town of Ronchamp.
Designed by Le Corbusier and built in 1955, this expressionist chapel is one of the icons of 20th century European architecture.
In Notre Dame du Haut, these side chapels puncture the massive main roof and allow light in from above, carefully controlled and colored to give each chapel a separate identity and intimacy.

 [No title]
Modernist architecture is analogous to non-representational art in that it seeks to avoid recognizable forms (or types) as far as possible, and to avoid substantive content in favor of emotional evocation.
The problem only arises when there is no content, when the viewer is prodded into an emotional state and then left on his own to provide the content of his own choosing.
Likewise, one might expect the architecture which houses these various activities, that is, the architecture of the city, to appear coherent and ordered to the same end, and at the same time to depict their hierarchical ordering.

Whether adding highly personal touches to his exquisitely designed tables, restoring the facade of the 1924 Tivoli Theatre, or creating just the right design problem for his students, Safe innately understands the delicate relationship between each individual piece and the whole.

Safe describes the soaring structure of the Notre Dame du Haut church in Ronchamp, France, as "one of the most important icons of 20th-century architecture." Said Safe: "For me, it represents the best that architecture has to offer, architecture that is truly capable of lifting the human spirit.

As early as 1937, a dozen modern painters were invited to design the windows at Notre Dame de Toute Grâce d'Assy in Haute-Savoie.
The project, a source of some controversy anyway (many of the artists were neither particularly pious nor particularly interested in depicting religious scenes), was interrupted by the outbreak of World War II.
The first completed non-figurative project was by Alfred Manessier, an up-and-coming painter of the School of Paris, who created seven windows for the 18th-century country church of Les Bréseux, beginning in 1948.

Hallowed since pagan days, Haut Lieu lies near the invasion route through the Belfort Gap, and in war it makes a prime military observation post.
Over the centuries the chapel has been repeatedly destroyed; each time it has been faithfully rebuilt by loyal parishioners.
For Le Corbusier, who is currently building a new capital city at Chandigarh in India's Punjab (TIME, June 8, 1953) and erecting a second edition of his much-discussed Marseille "radiant city" outside Nantes, the opportunity to build his first church was irresistible.
