Notting Hill - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-07)
Notting Hill is a district of London located to the west of the centre and close to the north-western corner of Hyde Park.
The name Notting Hill came to prominence when a turnpike gate was constructed at the bottom of the hill on the main road from London to Uxbridge, which is now known as Oxford Street, Bayswater Road and Holland Park Avenue along this part of its route.
The Notting Hill houses were large but they did not, when built, succeed in capturing the very richest Londoners, who tended to live further towards the centre of London in Mayfair or Belgravia.

Notting Hill (film) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Notting Hill is a 1999 romantic comedy film set in the Notting Hill district of London, England, UK.
Upon release the movie was heavily criticised by some for presenting an 'ethnically cleansed' vision of West London despite being set in one of London's most diverse and multicultural areas.
The soundtrack of the movie features an Elvis Costello cover of the Charles Aznavour song "She" [1].

Colorful Notting Hill more than a movie set
Notting Hill is a hybrid that is home to such varied celebrities as actor Alan Rickman, Beatle daughter and designer Stella McCartney, Blur frontman Damon Alborn and media executive Elizabeth Murdoch (daughter of Rupert), while still maintaining a sizable minority population.
Notting Dale, as the neighborhood initially was called, was born in the late 19th century, when high-society architects were commissioned to build neoclassical mansions on the fringes of an industrial area best-known for its brickfields.
But perhaps the best-known of all of Notting Hill's attractions is the Portobello Market, which each Saturday draws thousands of tourists who brave the crowds to paw through table after table of antique -- and not-so-antique -- offerings.

"Notting Hill" is one of those romantic-comedies that plays it safe by relying on internally-generated conflict in order to propel the drama.
As it is, "Notting Hill" plays it safe with very few extenuating circumstances to complicate matters.
With few standout scenes, a lack of chemistry between its two leads, and a poorly structured plot, "Notting Hill" is a by-the-book romantic comedy that never seems to fully embrace the possibilities posed by its fetching premise.

Julia Roberts and Hugh Grant star in the comical love story "Notting Hill" as two people from very different worlds, but as much as they realize they should not be together, they know they are meant for one another.
Upon meeting Thacker (Hugh Grant), the owner of a small travel book store, she is caught by his shy innocence and honesty only to find herself falling in love with him and his simple and calm lifestyle.
An entertaining film filled with great acting, writing, and some very humerous memorable movie moments, this film is one all will enjoy, but it's very plain and often predictable plot keeps this one out of the realm of movie blockbusters.

NOTTING HILL was definitely a disappointment for me. I have seen FOUR WEDDINGS AND A FUNERAL and really enjoyed it but Hill's plot was too overused.
I came out of the movie with my wife commenting to her that I had enjoyed the movie, and there you have it, as ole Hugh chap would say.
It is not a story that deserves a major award but the fantasy concept of falling in love with a famous actress and having her fall in love with an improbable candidate makes for a funny, sentimental, beautiful piece of entertainment.

 Notting Hill Movie Review
"Notting Hill" is a romantic fable that plays upon the fantasies in all us ordinary men and women.
Yet, "Notting Hill," written by Richard Curtis (who penned the delightful "Four Weddings and a Funeral"), so charmingly manipulates that very fantasy that we swallow the premise entirely.
A quick cameo by Alec Baldwin as Anna's movie star boyfriend shows the unconscious condescending nature that grips those who have gained fame and are too ill-equipped to handle the social graces attached to such public positions.

The acting is solid, and Roberts in particular brings a refreshing weariness to her role as a woman trapped by the exigencies of celebrity.
Set in the titular, oh-so-charming London neighborhood of Notting Hill, the film begins with a down-on-his-luck William Thacker (Hugh Grant) in his travel bookshop, counting all the money he owes and informing the audience of his freshly divorced, recent bachelor status (how convenient).

In the movie, there are at least 3 rather rough break-ups between the leading couple, when the traditional romantic flick has one major one.
Overall, the movie is pretty good, however, due to the stupid sex scene, sexual innuendo, cussing, and sadness, I can't grant this film more than 2 and a half stars.

Frankly, that would be fine if the actors in the film were convincing enough in their roles, but I must say that I was far from convinced of anything more than a simple novelty crush on a fidgety Englishman from the part of Julia Roberts' character.
