William Hendren, O.S.F., born in 1792, consecrated 10 September, 1848, as Vicar Apostolic of the Western District, transferred to the Diocese of Clifton, 29 Sept., 1850, and to Nottingham, 22 June, 1851.
The cathedral church of St. Barnabas is of the lancet style of architecture, and is considered one of the best specimens of the work of Augustus Welby Pugin.

Nottingham Cathedral has agreed to a request from its Hobart counterpart to allow the body of Bishop Robert Willson to be exhumed and flown to Australia once a final resting place is ready in 2007 or 2008.
He was one of the main campaigners for better conditions for convicts transported to Australia and it was partly because of his efforts that transportation to Tasmania was discontinued in 1853.
However, he died on a visit to England in 1866 and was buried in Nottingham Cathedral crypt.

Nottingham's St Barnabas Cathedral has joined forces with Police and Social Services to train volunteers to keep the church doors open seven days a week.
Monsignor Tom McGovern said: "The Cathedral used to be open 12 hours a day every day but there have been a few thefts and other criminal offences and although such incidents are rare we've been forced to lock the doors when there's nobody around.
Some come for quiet prayer or contemplation, some to enquire about the Catholic faith and others to enjoy the Pugin architecture or to visit the tomb of Nottingham's Mary Potter who is nominated for sainthood.

He gained his first restoration experience in Nottingham working on country churches and city banks, then graduated to the prestigious restoration team for the 700-year old Salisbury Cathedral, where, over a tenure of 7 years, he gained invaluable restoration skills and instructed new apprentices in the arts of traditional masonry.
In 1975, he was offered a position as stone carver at Washington National Cathedral, where he worked under the careful eye of two master carvers on such projects as Frederick Hart's three "Creation" sculptures over the west doors.

Canterbury Cathedral has always fascinated me because in the area where Thomas Beckett was murdered if you look closely at the floor you can see a skull imprinted on one of the floor stones.
The Necropolis cemetery next to Glasgow Cathedral is in my opinion the best cemetery I have ever visited.
