Literary influences on nouvelle vague cinema and cinematic influences on the nouveau roman
A good deal of the [Hiroshima Mon Amour]'s modernist sensibility stems directly from the "nouveau roman" (Alain Robbe-Grillet, Jean Cayrol, Raymond Queneau), a literary style that downplayed plot and action in favor of more reflexive meditations on the narrative process, language, temporality, memory, and subjectivity.
The nouveau roman writers have been involved in the theory as well as the practice of fiction, participating in a series of debates on issues such as the political significance of literature, formalism and structuralism and the status of the author.

The nouveau roman set out to challenge the illusion of reference (that the novel `refers' to life) insofar as reference is tied to representation.
Indeed, given the fragmentary or elliptical nature of nouveau roman narrative presentation, the reader's search for meaning is often thematized as an (impossible) attempt to solve an enigma (the nouveau roman frequently adopts the detective story format).
The impact of the nouveau roman was greatly magnified by the fact that the practice of novel writing was accompanied by thorough-going critical reflection on that practice.

Nouveau roman - Biocrawler   (Site not responding. Last check: )
Nouveau roman refers to certain 1950s French novels that diverged from classical literary genres.
Literally translated, the phrase means "new novel." Émile Henriot coined the title in an article in the popular French newspaper Le Monde on May 22, 1957 to describe certain writers who experimented with style in each novel, creating an essentially new style each time.
In contrast, modernist novelists each created a distinctive style for themselves which defined their works.

 Alain Robbe-Grillet
French author, literary theoretician, and representative of the nouveau roman - the new novel.
In 1951 he fell ill and wrote The Erasers, which made him one of the leaders of the nouveau roman group.
Despite its focus on objective reality cleansed of human feeling, Robbe-Grillet insisted, the nouveau roman is entirely subjective - its world is always perceived through the eyes of a character, not an omniscient narrator.

 The New Novel
The New Novel or Nouveau Roman refers to a movement in French literature that flourished in the mid-fifties and early sixties which called into question the traditional modes of literary realism.
In Pour un nouveau roman (1963), Robbe-Grillet argues that the traditional novel, with its dependence on an omniscient narrator, and adherence to the unities of time and place, creates an illusion of order and significance which is inconsistent with the radically discontinuous and aleatory nature of modern experience.
The task of the new novel, as he presents it, is to foster change by dispensing with any technique which imposes a particular interpretation on events, or which organizes events in such a way as to endow them with a determinate meaning.

Alain Robbe-Grillet, an influential theorist as well as writer of the nouveau roman, published a series of essays on the nature and future of the novel which were later collected in Pour un nouveau roman.
Instead, he put forward a theory of the novel as focused on objects: the ideal nouveau roman would be an individual version and vision of things, subordinating plot and character to the details of the world rather than enlisting the world in their service.
Huysmans, ninety years before, had suggested how the novel might be depersonalised; more recently, Kafka had shown that conventional methods of depicting character were not essential; Joyce had done the same for plot; and absurdist writers had engaged with some of the themes which preoccupied writers of/on the nouveau roman.

The New Novelists were all about creating critical context for their fiction: Robbe-Grillet kicked things off with Pour un nouveau roman, a collection of essays on the novel's past and present, and Butor wrote a piece titled "The Future of the Book", among many others.
This might be why the nouveau roman is generally considered a failure: it didn't end up remaking the mainstream of fiction.
