Nova - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A nova (pl. novae) is a cataclysmic nuclear explosion caused by the accretion of hydrogen onto the surface of a white dwarf star.
Nonetheless, this is enough energy to accelerate nova ejecta to velocities as high as several thousand kilometers per second--higher for fast novae than slow ones--with a concurrent rise in luminosity from a few times solar to 50,000-100,000 times solar.
Though it would seem that the contributions of novae to the Galaxy might be large over astronomical time scales, this is not the case; in fact, novae supply only 1/50th the amount of material to the interstellar medium as supernovae do, and only 1/200th that of red giant and supergiant stars.

Nova Scotia's politics are divided on regional lines in such a way that it has become difficult to elect a majority government.
Cape Breton Island, a large island to the northeast of the Nova Scotian mainland, is also part of the province, as is Sable Island, a small island notorious for its shipwrecks, approximately 175 km (95 nm) from the province's southern coast.

Nova eruptions by dying stars were thought to be simple, predictable acts of violence.
Scientists using the Hubble telescope, however, were surprised to find that some nova outbursts may not produce smooth shells of gas, but thousands of gaseous blobs, each the size of our solar system.
In this Hubble picture of the nova T Pyxidis, the shells of gas ejected by the star are actually more than 2,000 gaseous blobs packed into an area that is 1 light-year across.

A nova is caused by runaway thermonuclear reactions on the surface of a white dwarf star that has been accreting matter from a more normal companion star.
Nova Cygni was known as a ``neon nova'' because its ejecta evidently contained a much larger proportion of elements such as neon, oxygen, and nitrogen relative to hydrogen than is present in our Sun.
Novae provide one of the ways by which processed stellar material is injected back into the interstellar medium, where it may eventually become part of a cloud that collapses into a star or planetary system.
