New Albion -- Facts, Info, and Encyclopedia article   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-09)
The extent of New Albion and the location of Drake's landing has long been debated by historians, with the most prevailing theory that he landed on coast of northern (A state in the western United States on the Pacific; the 3rd largest state; known for earthquakes) California.
However, Drake was always uneasy with the misrepresentations in the "official" account, and in 1592, he wrote Queen Elizabeth in reference to "the certain truth concealed, as I have thought it necessary myself." and requesting that the account be rewritten accordingly.
Our General called this country Nova Albion, and that for two causes; the one in respect of the white banks and cliffs, which lie towards the sea, and the other, because it might have some affinity with our country in name, which sometime was so called.

This "Greater Nova Albion" would probably be separate from "Canada" to the east - OTL, the link between western and eastern Canada was tenuous at best (still is pretty weak) and only maintained because of the fear that the U.S. would move in if it wasn't (not an unreasonable fear, that).

Drake Latitudes on the Coast of California in 1579
Drake landed at his port of Nova Albion seven days after the solstice on June 17 when the solar declination (amount of drift from the equator), by Bourne's tables, was 23° 24' at noon in London, and departed on July 23 when the solar declination was 18° 00'.
The errors of solar refraction and solar parallax for altitude correction that would apply to the time and location of Drake's Nova Albion sighting amount to only 17 seconds of arc, and while not addressed here, are too small to be considered in sighting with the relatively course instruments of the time.
For example, for the longitude of Drake's Nova Albion landfall, for the plus or minus 91 days from the summer solstice to the fall and spring equinoxes, the error would range from plus 15 minutes to minus 13 minutes of arc.

Nonetheless, despite massive research, the whereabouts of Nova Albion remains as elusive as the Lost City of Atlantis.

Although the location of Drake's landing has never been definitely established, most historians believe it was in present-day northern California.
The coast had partially been explored in 1542 by Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo who sailed for the Spanish, but since England was in conflict with Spain and there were no Spanish claims yet on the land, Drake decided the area could be claimed.
