PENSACOLA - The cactus moth was hailed in the 1920s for stopping the prickly pear cactus from overrunning the Australian Outback, where the spiny plant had been imported from its native South America as a natural cattle fencing but got out of hand.
Scientists now are trying to stop the gray brown moth from advancing along the Gulf Coast to the Southwest and Mexico, where it could wreak havoc on cactus vital to agriculture, horticulture and the environment.
Adult moths from the latest generation apparently were no longer flying around when the storm hit, none had been caught in traps recently, but scientists are worried Katrina may have broken off cactus pads infested with caterpillars and scattered them into the gulf.

Native to South America, the gray-brown moth is a minor pest in the Southeast, dining on a few ornamentals and native species, but it could cause economic and environmental havoc in U.S. border states and Mexico.
Since then, the moth has eaten its way up the eastern seaboard to Charleston, S.C., and along the Gulf Coast to within 4 miles of the Florida-Alabama state line, said Ken Bloem, a U.S. Department of Agriculture scientist in Tallahassee.
The moth's rapid advance is particularly worrisome in Mexico, where prickly pear cactus is a cultural icon and an economic mainstay.

I did exactly the same last night and thought I had a new moth that was a Nov Agg.
The natural temptation is to try and match the moth in the hand against one of the illustrated specimens, disregarding the fact that (a) distinctive specimens were probably chosen for illustration and (b) this group is variable with a high degree of characteristic overlap.
Indeed it's not invasive - in my post I mention a stiff paintbrush - this is used to remove the scales from the end of the abdomen and expose the claspers; see Waring for the differences.

This item is useless to me because I have no more moths, and if I get another infestation, the moth trap is only good for 12 weeks, and I am sure I won't get another infestation until next summer.
This product reduced the number of "meal moths" flying about my kitchen as quickly as was possible, and I wasn't concerned about poisons, etc. Thanks for an answer to my distressing problem.
