  Russian Revolution - ninemsn Encarta
Russian Revolution, series of events in imperial Russia that culminated in 1917 with the establishment of the Soviet state that became known as the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR).
The first revolution, which began with the revolt of March 8 to 12, 1917 (February 23 to 27 in the Julian, or Old Style, calendar, then in use in Russia), overthrew the autocratic imperial monarchy; it is frequently called the February, or March, Revolution.
The second, which opened with the armed insurrection of November 6 and 7 (October 24 and 25), organized by the Bolshevik party against the provisional government, effected a change in all economic, political, and social relationships in Russian society; it is often designated the Bolshevik, or October, Revolution.

October Revolution - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The October Revolution was led by Vladimir Lenin and the Bolsheviks with the Mensheviks, Left Socialist-Revolutionaries and anarchists.
The revolution was widely regarded as a reaction to the strains that had been placed upon Tsarist Russia as a result of the great war.
With time, the October Revolution was seen as a hugely important global event, the first in a series of events that lay the groundwork for an epic Cold War struggle between the Soviet Union and Western capitalist countries, including the United States.

First World War.com - Primary Documents - Crown Prince Wilhelm on the German Revolution, 16 November 1918
With Germany actively seeking an armistice and revolution threatening, calls for Kaiser Wilhelm II to abdicate grew in intensity.
Wilhelm's abdication was announced by Chancellor Prince Max von Baden in a 9 November 1918 proclamation - before Wilhelm had in fact consented to abdicate (but after Social Democrat Philipp Scheidemann had announced the Kaiser's departure from the balcony of the Reichstag).
Having instigated the Kaiser's abdication Prince Max resigned, handing power to incoming Chancellor Friedrich Ebert who, in statements issued on 10 November and 17 November, appealed for public calm and reassured the German public that the incoming government would be "a government of the people".

In November 1918 in Germany power was in effect in the hands of the workers' and soldiers' councils, but the proletariat was not conscious of its dominant position.
It was seen as a means of consolidating support for the revolution among the more politically backward sections of the middle class and the peasantry, of legitimising the achievements of the soviets among all strata and in every corner of the country.

Central Europe Review - Author Archive: Sean Hanley
For Western observers, the Velvet Revolution with its fairy-tale-like qualities and powerful images, was, with the fall of the Berlin Wall, one of the defining moments of political change in the former Soviet bloc.
According to these interpretations, the Velvet Revolution was staged as part of elaborate conspiracy hatched by the StB and the KGB (with the possible assistance of the CIA and the West) to establish a corrupt nomenklatura capitalism under the guise of democracy.
For most people November 1989 was a short-lived euphoric outburst of public spirit and civic-mindedness, which soon gave way to the self-seeking and political cynicism, that was for many the habit of lifetime.

But the demise of the November Revolution after 74 years was not due to any fallacy ingrained in the revolution but due to direct violation of Marx and Lenin’s ideology and guidance for revolution at the later stages of the Soviet Union’s existence.
One motivated propaganda is that socialist revolution cannot be successful in a backward country and that was why the November Revolution failed.
Thus the possibility of a revolution in a backward country still holds good and Marx’s theory of revolution is again being confirmed by the present world events.

In the wake of the Allied resurgence in the summer and autumn of 1918 - with the breaking of the Hindenburg Line in Flanders and in the Argonne - and with the sudden collapse of its own allies - the German High Command came to the conclusion that the war could not be won.
As the month drew to a close and with the German public growing increasingly restless - revolution was less than two weeks away - the Kaiser appointed a new, reformist Chancellor, Prince Max von Baden, along with a more representative government.
Reproduced below is the text of Karl Liebknecht's address of 1 November 1918 in which he called for immediate revolution.

MARTIN BECK MATUSTIK -- VELVET REVOLUTION IN IRAN? -- LOGOS 5.3 FALL 2006
This is the fear that the Prague Spring of 1968 shares with the Velvet Revolution of 1989—and both share with the current global situation: the pro-democracy yet deeply religiously-inflected dissent in Iran is underscored by its radical nonviolence and opposition to all religious terror (whether by a totalitarian state or by religious fanatics).
Ganji voiced the view that “revolution cannot create democracy.” The anti-Shah revolution was not hijacked by the clerics, he said, just as the Bolshevik revolution was not stolen by Stalin, as Trotsky had claimed.
That revolution, some say, was no revolution—it lacked the Jacobin or Bolshevik edge and neither executed its enemies nor ate its own children, it only pushed aside the majority of dissidents whose story today it wishes to revise.

THE NOVEMBER REVOLUTION AND ITS BETRAYAL
The wonderful news, of course, is that the great right-wing grass roots revolution against Big Government, a revolution we at Triple R had been heralding since last summer, struck the Democrat Party in November everywhere it could, and swept it out of power.
Nader was speaking, of course, about the most glaring example of that betrayal: Dole, Gingrich, Armey and the rest of the new Republican leadership leaping to collaborate with the hated and repudiated Clinton to bring back the discredited lameduck Democrat Congress to ram Gatt down the throats of the American people.
The news of the betrayal of the revolution is appalling but unfortunately not surprising.

 Making Economic Sense
The imminent problem facing the new American Revolution is all too similar: that, while using the inspiring rhetoric of freedom, tax-cuts, decentralization, individualism, and a roll back to small government, the Republican Party elites will be performing deeds in precisely the opposite direction.
For the "Reagan Revolution" was precisely a taking of the revolutionary, free-market, and small government spirit of the 1970s, and the other anti- government vote of 1980, and turning it into its opposite, without the public or even the activists of that revolution realizing what was going on.
The clearest test of whether the revolution has already been betrayed is to look at the truly outrageous action of Gingrich and Dole in betraying not only the popular revolution, but even their own recent victory.
