Novocaine has long been on my list of films I wanted to see on DVD that I didn’t get a chance to in the theaters.
Novocaine has a relatively simple plot catalyst; that quickly falls into completely unpredictability, which is both good and bad.
Novocaine’s score dominates most of the rear channels, but effects are passed to the back on a number of occasions, all adding a nice enveloping effect.

Novocaine   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-22)
Novocaine, a first directing effort by David Atkins, aims to be a dark, edgy comedy about what happens to an ordinary guy caught in a spiral of circumstances that, by sheer number, become extraordinary.
He can do slapstick, it's true (he did, of course, dance around on happy feet with an arrow on his head and a banjo in his hands at one point in his career), but even that is informed by a braininess not matched by many "serious" actors.
Novocaine is kind of a cross between two of Martin's earlier films, The Spanish Prisoner and Little Shop of Horrors.

It was created by the German chemist Alfred Einhorn (1857-1917) who gave the chemical the trade name Novocaine, from the Latin 'Novus' (meaning New) plus 'caine' as in "cocaine".
It was introduced into medical use by surgeon Heinrich Braun (1862-1934).

It vacillates from dark comedy to forties-style melodrama, from light-hearted slapstick to medium-heavy gore and nudity, and in one particularly inexplicable sequence, Novocaine attempts to be a post-modernist Lacanian thing involving a character's heightened self-awareness as a fictional construct.
Novocaine is the worst kind of mystery/thriller in that it refuses to play fair with its audience.
As is symptomatic of a debut feature, Novocaine suffers from gimmicky and sometimes sloppy camerawork (watch for an unintentional cameo by Atkins reflected, Persona-like, in a glass cabinet in Dr. Frank's room); the film is also an endurance test of bad acting (Bacon and Dern are in the early Raspberry running).

Novocaine is an interesting study in what can result from a single lie, one that you could have and should have told the truth about.
Again though, as hilarious and entertaining as Novocaine can be, its humor is extremely dark at times, and is not for everyone, especially those people who have difficulty in watching painful scenes involving dentistry.

The best part of "Novocaine" occurs during its opening credits where eerie X-rays, which will intermittently appear throughout the film, are paired with Danny Elfman's "Edward Scissorhands" meets "Seven" score.
When the story begins, in an office environment strongly reminiscent of Robert Altman's "Dr. T and the Women," it sustains interest for a while, before sinking into a hopelessly over-plotted tale where the players are jerked around by the whims of story line rather than character development.
However, the Hitchcockian 'innocent man thrown into circumstances beyond his control' genre has far better representatives than "Novocaine" and this well assembled cast can't keep this one from spiralling out of control.

Danny Elfman 's Music For A Darkened People: Novocaine (2001)
Novocaine marks the first regular release of a Steve Bartek score, with this TVT disc featuring about 30 minutes of his music.
Danny Elfman's wacky "Main Titles" sort of set the tone for the rest of the score, and in terms of style and voice, Bartek's music is reminiscent of Elfman's, but the majority of Novocaine is written in a very linear fashion, unlike the style of composing Elfman usually employs.
A dark sense of humor runs through Bartek's score, with periodic moments of high-spirits (the whistling, la francais "Menilmontant", and the dentist-drill guitars in "Little Guys") but for the most part, a dark coolness permeates.
