Novocherkassk - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Novocherkassk ( Новочеркасск in Russian) is a former capital of the Don Cossacks, now a town in the Rostov Oblast in Russia, located on the right bank of the Tuzlov River and Aksai River.
Novocherkassk was founded in 1805 as an administrative center of the Don Voisko Lands, when the inhabitants of the Cherkassk stanitsa were compelled to leave their abodes on the banks of the Don on account of the frequent inundations.
Novocherkassk was once an archiepiscopal see of the Greek Orthodox Church and has a cathedral ( 1904), the palace of the ataman of the Cossacks, and monuments to Matvei Platov and Yermak Timofeyevich (1904).

The events in Novocherkassk cannot be compared with the heroic armed insurrection of the Poznan workers in June, 1956, or the Hungarian political strike of November 3-10, 1956.
Novocherkassk was the first experience in post-war Russia of mass action by a conscious section of the working class to protect their economic and political rights.
Novocherkassk had undoubtedly also weakened the reform wing because the bloody reprisal united the influential ally of Khrushchev, A.I.Mikoyan, with the "hawks." It would not be an exaggeration to say that Novocherkassk was the first toll of the bell for Khrushchev's regime (the second one was the Cuban missile crisis).

"Make Way for the Working Class!" - The Russian Workers' Uprising in Novocherkassk, 1962
Novocherkassk played an important role in the history of this crisis, particularly in the first stage, but it was not the only incidence of workers' protest against the Soviet regime.
The protests in Novocherkassk cannot be compared with the heroic armed uprising of Poznan workers in June 1956, nor with the nation-wide political strike in Hungary from 3-10 November 1956.
Furthermore, Novocherkassk and the whole of the Don region had been through massive repression at the time of the campaign against the Cossacks and in the famine of 1932-1933, which could not but have cast a heavy burden of fear on the collective conscience of the population.
