The Shinkansen (新幹線) is a network of high speed rail lines in Japan, upon which the famous "Bullet Trains" run.
The prefix 'shin' means 'new' in Japanese and is used to distinguish the railway station serving Shinkansen trains in towns where it is in a different location to the regular station, as in Shin-Osaka station.
Shinkansen trains now run regularly at speeds of up to 300 km/h (185 mph), putting them among the fastest trains running in the world, along with the French TGV and German ICE trains.

Tōkaidō Shinkansen (東海道新幹線) is the original Shinkansen line that opened in 1964 between Tokyo and Shin-Osaka.
The Tokaido Shinkansen line was originally conceptualized in 1940 as a 150 km/h dedicated railway between Tokyo and Shimonoseki, which would have been 50% faster than the fastest express train of the time.
The beginning of World War II stalled the project in its early planning stages, although a few tunnels were dug that were later used in the Shinkansen route.

With the "Nozomi" 300-series, thick beams have been eliminated and a new structure, in which the structural strength is sustained by the structure made of thin structural members, has been introduced reducing the body weight to 6.0tons.
The large extruded plates (with a thickness of 2.2mm, width of 600mm and height of 15-25mm and the same length of 24.5m as that of the car body) are shaped with longitudinal structural members installed at a spacing of 80-100mm.
When the Shinkansen construction project was launched, however, the internationally prevailing consensus was that railway transportation was destined to tread the path of gradual demise.

Among the most luxurious Shinkansen trains are the Grand Hikari, a double-decker train that travels between Tokyo and Kyushu, and the Twilight Express, a luxury hotel on wheels that runs from Osaka to Sapporo.
Shinkansen running along these lines offer two kinds of service -- trains that stop only at major cities (Nozomi and Hikari trains) and trains that make more stops and are therefore slightly slower (Kodoma).
Travel is restricted to JR rapid and local trains (that is, Shinkansen and limited express trains are not included in the pass) and unreserved seating.

The Shinkansen are bullet trains, averaging somewhere between 200 and 250 km/h, connecting Tokyo and Kyoto, for instance, in about three hours.
Like all JR trains, the Shinkansen have snack and gift carts, and extremely clean restrooms with separate wash rooms; unique to the Shinkansen are in-train telephones.
Each Shinkansen has its own name; for instance, between Tokyo and Hachinohe we took the Shinkansen Hayate (in English, “Whirlwind”), which is a pretty neat name for a bullet train.

 JR Rail Pass and Nozomi
Nozomi Shinkansen trains have always been off-limits to JR Rail Pass holders.
My understanding is that JR just completely overhauled the scheduling on the Tokaido Shinkansen, nominally upgrading many Hikari trains to Nozomi status (not particularly difficult, since most Hikaris have used the same 700 Series trainsets as most Nozomis for a few years now).
I was told today by my local JTB that Nozomis were still off-limits to JR Rail Pass holders, and that they had not heard of any plans for an update.
