These districts are Nsanje, Chikwawa, Thyolo, Phalombe, Mangochi, Machinga and Zomba in the Southern Region, Mchinji, Salima, Ntcheu and Nkhotakota in the Central Region, Karonga and Rumphi in the Northern Region.
A total of 217 villages in Nsanje were reported severely affected by floods at the end of February 2001 with a fear of more people being displaced since rains were still continuing in the upper parts of Malawi.
In Nsanje for example, all the low-lying areas are quite uninhabitable and this may continue until the end of March if rains continue as at present.

At least 29 children have died from hunger-related illnesses at Nsanje district hospital, raising fears that more children may die if food does not reach the district in the next two months, hospital officials disclosed this week.
Nsanje has been described by the UN agencies as the worst hit in the current crisis and most of the affected people have come from traditional authorities Tengani, Chimombo, Malemia and Ndamera.
According to a Nutrition Rehabilitation Unit (NRU) file accessed at Nsanje District Hospital, the hospital admitted 20 children in June, 12 in July and 28 in August this year.

Initially, the focus of the programme was on the general distribution of food as part of the Joint Emergency Food Aid Programme (JEFAP) in Blantyre and Chiradzulu districts between June 2002 and May 2003.
The precise modalities of the programme have still to be finalised, but GOAL has been invited to Nsanje on the back of an excellent reputation established over the last two years.
Nsanje has some unique challenges suffering regular droughts and flooding and is recognised as being one of the districts that has the greatest needs in a humanitarian context.

From the year 2001 to 2003 CARD is implementing an Integrated Food Security Programme in Nsanje, Thyolo and Mchinji districts, which aims at building the capacity of people to be food secure at their household level.
Nsanje District is located at the southern tip of Malawi bordered by Chikwawa District to the north, Thyolo District to the northeast and Mozambique to the south, southwest and southeast.
Nsanje district is one of the districts with frequent disasters caused by floods and drought due to its geographical position in the Shire valley.

The floods caused extensive damage in 233 villages in Chikwawa and 177 villages in Nsanje districts along the Shire river, destroying houses, roads and bridges as well as crops and livestock.
Nsanje district is in the Shire Valley which is at an altitude of 110 to 120 metres above sea level.
As a result, Nsanje is a chronically food deficient area and natural disasters exacerbate the situation.

The last outbreak of plague in Malawi was in 1997 when a total of 582 cases were reported including cases in Nsanje, Chikwawa and Ntchisi Districts, all in Southern Region.
The epidemic in 1994 lasted from the end of August to the end of October and caused 216 cases of bubonic plague of which three were fatal.
Plague was previously reported in Nsanje District in 1994 when 9 cases occurred in Mozambican refugees in Mankhokwe refugee camp and surrounding villages.

I had previously visited the district of Nsanje in southern Malawi, on the border of Mozambique, in December 2001, at a time when the local people had reported that all their maize stocks from the previous harvest had already run out.
There was no maize to feed their families or to sell to raise cash for essentials such as salt, cooking oil, soap, blankets and clothing.

In Nsanje District, which had a recent large influx of refugees, undernutrition was less among Mozambican children who had lived in Malawi for greater than or equal to3 months than among those who had arrived more recently (Table 2).
Signs of vitamin C deficiency (hemorrhagic gingivitis) were seen only in Ntcheu District (0.2% of children), and signs of vitamin A deficiency were seen only in Nsanje District (0.2% had either a history of night blindness or visible Bitot's spots).
In the 2 weeks before the survey, 17.7% of refugee children in Ntcheu and 16.6% of those in Nsanje were reported to have had diarrhea.
