Nuaulu claim to 'own' all forest from Manusela in the east to the Tala river and the sacred mystical mountain of Nunusaku in the west, and across the spine of the island as far as the north coast, placing much emphasis on the distribution of sago reserves.
Those Nuaulu who have re-located in the new settlements seem to derive considerable comfort from having achieved a kind of homecoming, and certainly this is reflected in the satisfaction it is said to have afforded the ancestors.
The historical movement of the Nuaulu to the coast (1870 onwards) had the twin effects of preserving patches of interior forest which might otherwise have been transformed, and of marginally intensifying the cutting of coastal forest, where they were in competition with pre-existing populations.

A result of two decades of work, Nuaulu Ethnozoology is a systematic list of Nuaulu faunal categories arranged in thirteen chapters, with Linnaean phylogenetic glosses and notes on categories and terms, the variations in identifications and classifications from different informants, and the social uses and cultural associations of specific animals.
Nuaulu Ethnozoology is partner to Ellen's other recent book, The Cultural Relations of Classification (CRC)--(Cambridge University Press, 1993) to which we are directed for much of the theory and methodology informing his research project.
The Nuaulu have one system of faunal classification, but it relies on a wide range of possible criteria and the categories are not part of a single all-embracing taxonomy.

 ULB - APFT/Articles
Nuaulu have successfully defended land claims in the courts, there have been violent incidents at a nearby transmigration area leading to their imprisonment, and in their representations to outsiders they have become articulate about the damage done to their environment.
The Nuaulu, for example, had an identifiable role in the relations of European contact as early as the Dutch wars of the late seventeenth century, as we know from the VOC archives and from the `Landbeschrijving' of Rumphius [Ellen 1988b: 118, 132n2].
Nuaulu movement to the coast meant a shift from a pattern of dispersed clan-hamlets and swiddens to concentrated multi-clan villages with large connected areas of garden land.

The Nuaulu first became incorporated within the administrative structure of Sepa, as a separate 'soa', for a period under their own raja, and around 1882 became part of the 'Onderafdeeling' of Amahai.
It is to this which I refer when I speak of 'the Nuaulu area': the greater part of the land mass between Elpaputih Bay in the west and Teluti Bay in the east, south of the watershed formed by the central mountainous spine of the island.
The land rapidly steepens away from the shoreline and even coastal populations such as the Nuaulu are forced to cultivate gardens on the steep valley walls of the short rivers descending to the sea.

ESRC Society Today - R000239310 - Frequency and periodicity in Nuaulu ritual reproduction, Eastern Indonesia
There are approximately 2000 Nuaulu, a group of people who worship their ancestors and live on the island of Seram, in the Indonesian province of Maluku.
It finds that for Nuaulu people, experience of ritual is, for the most part, constituted by preparation, which in turn makes timing at least as important as performance.
For example, whilst Nuaulu animists were able to continue their rituals during the civil unrest between 1999 and 2003 which impacted the Christian and Muslim populations, displacement affected their timing and the ability to source necessary materials.

The Cultural Relations of Classification - Cambridge University Press
Roy Ellen, who has worked among the Nuaulu people of eastern Indonesia for more than twenty years, argues here that ethnobiology is a key theoretical area of anthropological enquiry, because it relies on accessible ethnography to explain the interrelationship between collective representations and cognitive processes.
He demonstrates this through a detailed analysis of Nuaulu classification of animal knowledge: the relationship between animal words and animal categories; the construction of different categories and their relationship to one another, and the actual language of classification.
The classifications are shown to be context-bound and socially embedded, of practical importance to their users, and to reflect an interaction between culture, cognitive processes and the material world.

Notes that the Nuaulu classification system is less consistent than that in non-Nuaulu villages in the mountains, where frogs are a more important source of protein.
