Topic: Nubuwwah

In the News (Sat 28 Nov 09)

Roots of Religion - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
They believe that God acts according to a purpose or design, and human reason cannot comprehend this design or purpose in its entirety (though man must always strive to understand as much as he can).
"Nubuwwah" means "Prophethood" and denotes that God has appointed perfect Prophets and Messengers to teach mankind Gods religion.
Imamah (Leadership): God has appointed specific leaders to lead and guide mankind — a prophet appoints a custodian of the religion before his demise.

 Divine Guidance
Nubuwwah aimed at this result and when it was accomplished there was no reason for the continuance of this institution.
The purpose of nubuwwah was to serve and safe-guard man's freedom when it was threatened both from within by his unruly selfish passions and from without by the arbitrary power of rulers and priests.
The purpose of the abolition of nubuwwah is to widen the scope of human freedom and to allow man to judge and decide on all questions affecting his life.

 The Qur’an and Imamah
No distinction is made between the appointment of Muhammad sallallahu ‘alayhi wasallam as the Messenger of Allah and the appointment of the twelve Imams as his successors.
Since Imamah is then for all practical purposes on exactly the same plane as Nubuwwah and Risalah, consistency would dictate that the rejection of Imamah be censured with the same severity as the rejection of Nubuwwah and Risalah.
The utter lack of harmony between this form of leadership and Shi‘i Imamah is nowhere more clearly brought to light than in the authentically narrated saying of Imam Ja‘far as-Sadiq which points at the corruption of the text of the Qur’an at the hands of the Sahabah radiyallahu ‘anhum as the reason for the disparity.

There is consensus amongst the Imamiyyah (the Ithna ‘Ashari or Ja‘fari shia) that whoever denies the Imamah of anyone of the Imams, and denies the duty of obedience to them that Allah has decreed, that such a person is a kafir, misguided, and that he deserves everlasting torment in Hell.
Imamah is a universal grace (lutf ‘amm) while Nubuwwah is a special grace (lutf khass), because it is possible that a specific period in time can be void of a living Nabi, while the same is not true for the Imam.
The utter lack of harmony between this form of leadership and Shiite Imamah is nowhere more clearly brought to light than in the authentically narrated saying of Imam Ja‘far as-Sadiq which points at the corruption of the text of the QURAN at the hands of the SAHAABAH {radiyallahu ‘anhum} as the reason for the disparity.

Iqbal: The Poet Philosopher of Islamic Resurgence
Iqbal's idea of propagating the message of Islam and breaking all the artificial boundaries drawn to divide nations leads him to expound certain other notions that are predominant in his philosophy of bikhudi (selflessness), that is, the unification of the individual with the society and his absorption therein.
According to him nubuwwah (prophethood) is the principal source of the organization of the Ummah.
For this purpose the most fundamental and the best of all the ideologies is the one that was propounded through nubuwwah, the prophetic mission, and it was propounded by the messengers of God.

 Shi'I Concept of Imaamat Explained
A: It is most distressing and unfortunate that you have elected to perceive our presentation of the Shi‘i concept of Imamah in comparison with Nubuwwah as hate mongering.
It has to be candidly admitted that your pejorative characterization of our presentation would have been quite truthful and accurate had it been based solely on the extract from the book "The Faith of Shia Islam" and on nothing else.
It appears that it is this ineptitude that has led you into a condemnation of our description of Imamah as being superior to Nubuwwah in the belief structure of the Shi‘ah.

It is equally as sad to acknowledge that some of these charlatans have influenced a number of people who identify themselves as Muslims to allow themselves to be consumed by this false and dangerous notion.
Let us briefly examine the concepts of nubuwwah (Prophethood) and rasaalah (Messengership) in Islam to understand the comprehensive nature of what it means to be a prophet and messenger.

So that people should adopt his religious commandments and precepts with full certainty and confidence, submit to his instructions considering them to be those of the apostle himself and believe in him wholeheartedly with complete peace of mind.
Such a vicegerent is known as an ‘Imam’ in jurisprudential terms after the completion of prophecy (Nubuwwah), and the office of vital responsibility of grand religious leadership is known as ‘Imamah’.
This crucial responsibility could not be left at the hands of general public because the decisive factor of Imamat is infallibility and only Allah or his apostle or those associated with the holy prophet (s.a.w) can be aware of it.

Islam asserts that after the doctrine of Divine Oneness, or the doctrine concerning the nature of God (al-tawhid), the most important doctrine is that of prophecy (nubuwwah).
According to Islamic understanding, God has made prophecy the central reality of human history; the cycle of prophecy began with Adam and was brought to close with the Quranic revelation.
Understood in this sense, revelation is clearly distinguished from inspiration, which is possible for all human beings by virtue of their being human.

A Clarification [Tauzeeh-e-Maraam] by Hazrat Mirza Ghulam Ahmad Sahib of Qadian
Be aware of the fact that in certain respects a nabi (prophet) is a muhaddath and a muhaddath is a nabi by virtue of the fact that the muhaddath receives one of the many forms of nubuwwah (prophethood).
This means that there no longer remain any of the various forms of nubuwwah, except one and, that is mubashshirat, which consists of true visions and genuine experiences of illuminating revelations.
Although the hadith suggest that nubuwwah at-tamma (complete and perfect prophethood) in which the recipient experiences wahy al-shariah (Divine revelation conveying religious laws and decrees) has certainly come to an end, yet a kind of nubuwwah which does not include anything except mubashshirat will continue till the day of Resurrection and will never cease.
