Dounreay - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The airfield was transferred to the Admiralty by RAF Coastal Command in 1944, as a satellite of HMS Tern at Twatt in the Orkney Isles.
Decommissioning of Dounreay is planned to bring the site to an interim care and surveillance state by 2036, and as a brownfield site by 2336, at a total cost of £2.9 billion.

Nuclear power can also be generated in a Radioisotope thermoelectric generator, which produces heat through subcritical radioactive decay rather than fission in a near-critical mass.
In the vast majority of the world's nuclear power plants, heat energy generated by fissioning uranium fuel is collected in purified water and is carried away from the reactor's core either as steam in boiling water reactors or as superheated water in pressurized-water reactors.
Nuclear power does have very useful additional advantages such as the production of radioisotopes (used in medicine and food preservation), though the demand for these products can be satisfied by a relatively small number of plants.

Nuclear Decommissioning Authority - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Nuclear Decommissioning Authority (NDA) is a public body of the United Kingdom formed by the Energy Act, 2004.
Its purpose is to oversee and manage the decommissioning and clean-up of the UK’s civil nuclear legacy.
On its creation, the NDA also took over ownership of Direct Rail Services, the rail freight operating company set up by BNFL in 1995 to transport nuclear materials.

60 billion pounds required to destroy UK's nuclear waste
The NDA, established in April after the various nuclear bodies in the country were reorganised, has initiated a three-month consultation on how the 20 aging nuclear sites in the country could be closed safely.
The NDA said the time required for decommissioning the Magnox stations would be around 25 years, against the earlier plan to make them safe in a period of 10 to 15 years and then to leave them for 60 or 70 years, before returning to finish the job.
NDA, after proper study of the plant said in its document that the plant is not capable of handling thousands of tonnes of spent fuel even from Britain's plants.

The Nuclear Decommissioning Authority, which is launched today, Friday 1st April 2005, has strategic responsibility for the decommissioning and clean-up of all 20 of the UK public sector civil nuclear sites.

Breakthrough answers needed to solve decommissioning problems are unlikely to be found within the continuous improvement culture of the old style nuclear industry; better mousetraps won’t necessarily make a big difference to the estimated £48 billion ($88 billion) cost of decommissioning Britain’s civil nuclear infrastructure over the next 100 years.
While experiences with US nuclear waste may not always be typical, they are important because the USA has the oldest nuclear programme in the world, the largest amount of waste needing disposition and the most financial resources to do so sensibly and safely.
The nuclear regulators and the NDA will need to work much more closely together in the future to agree precisely what clean-up methods and techniques are fit for the purpose and share best practice across the UK clean-up programme.

Decommissioning is not expected to be complete before 2036 (markedly shorter than earlier estimates which would probably have stretched out till the 22nd century) and the UKAEA has said that the main hazards will be made ‘passively safe’ in the next 20 years.
Decommissioning to the extent of the site being made passively safe is expected to be completed in 2017 with final clearance by 2065, although clearly there is no possibility of the site being released even then.

BBC - Cumbria - Features - Nuclear decommissioning at Sellafield
Decommissioning is basically the complete dismantling of former nuclear facilities.
The official rather wordy definition from the DTI is: 'Decommissioning is a staged process through which a nuclear facility, at which normal operations have finally ceased, is taken out of service, including full or partial dismantling of buildings and their contents.
The objective of decommissioning is to remove the hazard the facility poses progressively, giving due regard to security considerations, the safety of workers and the general public and protecting the environment, while in the longer term reducing the number of sites and acreage of land which remain under regulatory control.'

UK's nuclear decommissioning costs exceed Pnds 50 billion - Irna
Decommissioning Britain's ageing nuclear power stations will cost billions of pounds more than what was previously estimated, according to the first report by the country's recently established Nuclear Decommissioning Authority.
Authority chairman Sir Anthony Cleaver said that the new estimate was based on the costs over the whole lifetime of the sites.
The decommissioning estimates come as Britain is considering building a new era of nuclear plants as part of a mix to offset the country becoming more dependent on oil and gas imports with reserves in the North Sea running dry.

UK nuclear decommissioning efforts now answerable to Nuclear Decommissioning Authority
That effort involves, by and large, the decommissioning of those facilities at sites that were designed to manufacture Britains nuclear capability in the first place.
By a 2004 order of the British Government’s Department of Trade and Industry, the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority (NDA) came into existence on Friday April 1st, and ownership of the UK’s main nuclear sites, including Sellafield and Dounreay were passed into the new organsation.
The last parts of the reactors core were removed in 2003 but the entire decommissioning process will not be completed until 2130, when radioactivity levels are sufficiently low to dismantle its remain support structures.

Decommissioned highway Largely in the United States of America, as the states build freeways as a new classification of highways, the state may strip the old highway of its old designation as a numbered highway or downgrade it to a 'lesser' status.
This is especially common in the United States of America, where as an extreme example, U.S. Highway 66, which connected Chicago and Los Angeles from 1926 until 1972, lost its designation as a U.S. Highway in stages until it disappeared altogether in 1986 in favor of faster, more direct Interstate highways.

Although plutonium is the fissile material that lends itself most easily to producing nuclear weapons, it is also possible to use the basic fuel of nuclear power stations, enriched uranium, for similar purposes.
The counter-arguments to nuclear power are authoritative and convincing, but their proponents should recall the sheer lobbying strength of the nuclear power supporters forty years ago.
