  The Thinkable
During the same period, other potential nuclear states were restrained -- by treaties, by the threat of sanctions and other diplomatic pressures, by the superpowers' semi-monopoly on technology and by the fact that weak nations could huddle under the nuclear protection of one bloc or the other.
The second nuclear age was heralded by a rumble under the Rajasthani desert in 1998, as India's newly elected Hindu nationalist government detonated five test blasts.
As for the Nuclear Nonproliferation Treaty, which entered into force in 1970 and is supposed to limit the spread of nuclear technology and material, the administration accepts it as a bequest from the past but regards it as pointless.

Why I own donkeys. By Jon Katz
Once, donkeys were the tractors and ATVs of country life, performing agricultural and mercantile tasks that were integral to farming and commerce.
Donkey No. 2 joined her when I got a phone call from a woman who described herself as a "Jewish donkey spiritualist," a term I hadn't heard before and don't expect to hear again.
She was not aware of her "donkeyness"; having lived with sheep all of her life, she probably didn't even know she was a donkey.

The book gives details of the varying nuclear and 'secret' sites that were open to inspections and discusses how the program fell apart after the war in 1991 and what happened to the documents and information gathered by the scientists for over a decade.
After all, donkeys and mules are very widely used in Afghanistan to travel through the rocky, mountainous region- their presence in Baghdad is highly suspicious.
It is, as yet, unclear whether the donkeys are foreign guerillas who crossed into Iraq from one of the neighboring countries, or are actually a part of a local Al-Qaeda cell.

Donkey Path: Bush, India and Iran
The jury is still out on nuclear energy; some improvements have been made since Chernobyl and Three Mile Island but, more important, promises in new technology have been made for years but not fully brought to fruition.
As the oil age begins to wind down in the next few decades, that means new energy sources will be needed and sustainable, alternative energy sources may not be enough, particularly in the beginning, since a lot of infrastructure for alternative energy needs to be put in place.
Alternative energy (solar, wind, bio, etc.) should be the goal, not nuclear energy, but nuclear energy, simply as an important stopgap, may be making a comeback (and I can see major political battles making sure that nuclear energy is a stopgap unless various issues are fully addressed).

This can be illustrated quite nicely in the caricature of the donkey with the carrot dangling in front of him and the master's stick behind him.
Where the carrot represents desire, or "reward" for the donkey, the stick instills fear of "punishment" by the master, both with the objective of propelling the animal forward.
It works well on donkeys, and whether we like to admit it or not, humans are much the same.

 Obsidian Wings: Nuclear Power
In the current international environment, the dissuasion argument for new nuclear weapons overlooks the deterrence role of WMD from a regional power's point of view--particularly of one the United States is hostile toward.
Since 20-kiloton standard nuclear warhead has 8 kilograms of critical mass, this amounts to mass of material of nuclear fission out of which about 3 nuclear warheads could be extracted.
If you could go from you nuclear project being off or low-key, to having a nuclear weapon in 2 years (which is precisely what you posit for North Korea to have one a year ago if you don't believe they had one in 1998) the much more technologically sophisticated Iran would already be nuclear.

The first time the donkey was used in a political cartoon to represent the Democratic party, it was again in conjunction with Jackson.
Nast intended the donkey to represent an anti-war faction with whom he disagreed, but the symbol caught the public's fancy and the cartoonist continued using it to indicate some Democratic editors and newspapers.
By 1880 the donkey was well established as a mascot for the Democratic party.

Just as most of these students do not take personal ethical responsibility to protest involvement in nuclear weapons research and development by their university, most leaders and potential leaders of nuclear weapons states do not accept the necessity of challenging the nuclear status quo and working to achieve nuclear disarmament.

First, the NPT, to which Iran is a signatory, is a nuclear nonproliferation treaty, not a nuclear bartering tool… Second, if there are different ways to interpret a contract, the one that lends the greatest support to its provisions and prime intent is the one any sound lawyer or judge must back.
Article IV of the NPT makes clear that non-nuclear weapons state members are free to exercise their right to develop peaceful nuclear energy, but only if they do so "in conformity" with the NPT's nonproliferation restrictions.
Nuclear activities and materials that cannot be safeguarded, then, cannot count on being protected by the NPT.

With each hour it seems increasingly likely that the "nuclear option" to ban filibusters on judicial nominees will be triggered by Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist — a move that will be hailed by GOP partisans and the White House but could usher in an era of intensified polarization in Congress and throughout the country.
"I want to be clear: We are prepared for a vote on the nuclear option," Reid said in a letter to Frist, referring to the GOP threat to change the filibuster rules.
The Post notes that if the "nuclear option" is successfully employed it's likely to smooth the way for passage of any nominees Bush names to the Supreme Court.

His answer, as usual, is to fire off a barrage of paper bullets, negotiating new "anti-proliferation" treaties and appointing new people, as a cover for doing nothing of real substance.

A 396-amino acid nuclear protein termed SNIP1 was cloned and shown to harbor a nuclear localization signal (NLS) and a Forkhead-associated (FHA) domain.
Thus, SNIP1 is a nuclear inhibitor of CBP/p300 and its level of expression in specific cell types has important physiological consequences by setting a threshold for TGF-beta-induced transcriptional activation involving CBP/p300.
However no additional claims are made for their ability to recognise native protein in any application.

I know that we're still on the tail end of an ice age and that our average temperature will probably go up a bit naturally over the next few centuries, but that doesn't mean that the concept of global warming (in an SUV driving, aerosol can spraying sense) doesn't actually exist like many people argue.
