Nuclear Regulatory Commission - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Nuclear Regulatory Commission (or NRC) is a United States government agency that was established by the Energy Reorganization Act in 1974, and was first opened January 19, 1975.
The oversight of nuclear weapons, as well as the promotion of nuclear power, was transferred to the Energy Research and Development Administration by the same act, thereby eliminating the AEC (in 1977, ERDA became the United States Department of Energy).
The NRC is headed by five Commissioners appointed by the President of the United States and confirmed by the United States Senate for five-year terms.

Indian Point, including a detailed explanation of the factual basis upon which the NRC and FEMA have approved the plans, despite conclusions by former FEMA head James Lee Witt that the plans are gravely flawed and in the event of a fast-breaking release probably could not protect the public.

Specifically, the NRC voted to approve a final design certification rule for the AP1000 advanced reactor design, submitted by Westinghouse in March 2002.
With a certified design rule, safety issues within the scope of the design are not subject to litigation, although site-specific environmental impacts associated with building and operating the plant are, the NRC said.
Ganthner said it usually takes around 10 years to build a nuclear plant, which is an improvement over the 20 years it used to take, he said.

Earlier, Klein was on a presidential commission that studied the need for an interim storage site where nuclear waste could be packaged and consolidated until a repository was finished.

Although the original guidance in NUREG-0654/FEMA-REP-1 was never intended to imply that the appropriate protective action for severe accidents was to only shelter the population that is near the plant, the guidance was not explicit on this point.
Thus, the NRC and FEMA have updated and simplified the guidance for the development of protective action recommendations for severe accidents in Draft Supplement 3 to NUREG-0654/FEMA-REP-1 to emphasize that evacuation is the preferred initial protective action for severe accidents, barring any constraints for evacuation.
During the first few hours of an accident at a nuclear power plant, critical decisions may be necessary concerning protective actions for the public.
