The nucleariids are a small group of (Naked freshwater or marine or parasitic protozoa that form temporary pseudopods for feeding and locomotion) amoebae with filose pseudopods, known mostly from soils and freshwater.
They are distinguished from the similar (Click link for more info and facts about vampyrellid) vampyrellids mainly by having (Click link for more info and facts about mitochondria) mitochondria with discoid cristae.
Nucleariids are usually small, up to about 50 μm in size.

Together with the nucleariids they include the majority of the naked filose amoebae.
The close relationship between animals and fungi was suggested by Cavalier-Smith in 1987, who used the informal name opisthokonta (the formal name has been used for the chytrids), and was confirmed by later genetic studies.

The vast majority of filose amoebae, including all those that produce shells, are placed within the (Click link for more info and facts about Cercozoa) Cercozoa together with various flagellates that tend to have amoeboid forms.
The naked filose amoebae comprise two other groups, the (Click link for more info and facts about vampyrellid) vampyrellids and (Click link for more info and facts about nucleariid) nucleariids.
The latter appear to be close relatives of (A living organism characterized by voluntary movement) animals and (The taxonomic kingdom of lower plants) fungi.

Our data indicate that 1) choanoflagellates are monophyletic rather than a paraphyletic assemblage that independently gave rise to animals and fungi as suggested by some authors, and 2) the nucleariid filose amoebae are the likely sister group to Fungi.
Choanoflagellates, which share structure similarities with choanocytes of sponges, are a monophyletic group that shared the most recent common ancestry with metazoans.
The addition of nucleariid filose amoebae to the rDNA trees positions these protists as a sister group to fungi and together these taxa form a complex lineage that shared a common ancestry with the animals.

The nucleariid amoeba typically have a rounded body extending from which are elongated filopodia.
All members of the genus so far have been isolated from freshwater, however it is likely that the genus is also present in marine environments as a Nuclearia-like SSUrDNA has been accidentally cloned from marine material (

Most such amoeboids are now placed among the Cercozoa Cercozoa, including the chlorarachniophyte chlorarachniophytes, which have acquired chloroplast chloroplasts.
The vampyrellid vampyrellids and nucleariid nucleariids belong elsewhere, however, and the latter have been shown to be close relatives of animal animals and fungi fungi.

Divergence of the ancestral protist gave rise to the two main opisthokont lineages we have today.
The one includes fungi and the nucleariid [4] amoebae, while the other includes animals and the protists Chaenoflagellata [5], Ministeriida [6], Ichthyosporea [7] and Corallochytrea [8].
Our research focuses specifically on the diversity and evolution of micro-opisthokonts, in other words the opisthokont microbes, which are mostly represented by fungi and protists.
