  Nueva Segovia
The town of Nueva, or New, Segovia was in the Province of Cagayan, and was founded in 1581.
The territory retained by the Diocese of Nueva Segovia embraces the Provinces of Ilocos Norte, Ilocos Sur, Union, Pangasinan, five towns in the province of Tarlac, the sub-province of Abra, and also a large part of what is called the Mountain province; all this territory lies between 15° and 19° N. lat.
The population of the Diocese of Nueva Segovia is about one million, consisting principally of the Ilocanos and Pangasinanes tribes, besides mountaineers who are nearly all Igorrotes.

 Threat of Fire Grows in Nicaragua
The Government of Nicaragua (GON) issued a "yellow alert" for the state of Nueva Segovia in mid-February 2002, in partial response to the rising threat of widespread forest fires across the northwest region of the country (Landsat Satellite image of northwest Nicaragua and neighboring Honduras).
Over 30 fires have scorched Nueva Segovia (see map of state) this year, all of them are presently contained.
Nueva Segovia is one of the many regions of northwest Nicaragua that have been badly affected by the worldwide coffee glut, as small scale producers there depend upon cash from coffee to finance the planting of basic grains and non-traditional crops.

On August 14, 1595, Pope Clement VIII raised the diocese to the status of an archdiocese and created three new dioceses as suffragan to Manila: Nueva Caceres, Nueva Segovia, and Cebu.

In April 2004, firefighters extinguishing forest fires in Nueva Segovia department could not enter forested areas due to the presence of landmines; this resulted in increased loss of forested areas in a region already suffering from deforestation and drought.
The OAS PADCA Coordinator for Ocotal in the department of Nueva Segovia stated in February 2003 that amateur demining had been significantly reduced because of the visible presence of, and advancement made by, Nicaragua’s demining fronts, and because of a belief that the military would demine these areas in the near future.

The Segovian Movement for Dignity, representing several campesino and civic organizations in Nueva Segovia, began the protest on November 3, blocking cargo and passenger traffic by placing rocks and tree trunks across the highway.
Authorities also promised to resolve land conflicts involving cooperative properties and those held by ex-contras; and agreed to modernize the telephone network with fiberoptics in 12 of the region’s municipalities.

He is the sixth archbishop of Nueva Segovia since 1927 and 36th archbishop of the see since it was founded in August 14, 1595.

The three provinces of Cagayan, Isabela and Nueva Vizcaya were once combined and referred to as the Cagayan valley.
In 1595 Nueva Segovia in Cagayan became the seat of the diocese by that name, including in its jurisdiction the entire Northern Luzon.
Citing reasons of distance and the desire for a more central location, Bishop Fuentes y Yepes requested for the transfer of the seat of the diocese to Vigan, Ilocos Sur, but retained the name of the Cagayan town, Nueva Segovia, where the seat of the diocese had stood for 112 years.

 24/4/2003 -- Forest fires rage in northern Nicaragua countryside
Government statistics report the damage was far less widespread but say that in the last 35 days, 16 fires have destroyed 6,375 hectares (15,755 acres) of forests in five Nueva Segovia cities.
Flames continue to spread in one of those locales, Jalapa, where 1,300 soldiers, police officers, property owners, and volunteers were using buckets, poles, and other small tools donated by the government of Japan to fight the fire.
Forest fires are a yearly problem in Nicaragua, but Julio Herrera of the National Forestry Institute said the fires were made worse in Nueva Segovia by drought and farmers who burned off land to plant crops.

I tried to ride it on their drying patio but the action was way too lose for an old-timer like myself.
I was really impressed with one of the local cupping stations (sponsored by USAID and CLUSA) we visited outside Dipilto in the state of Nueva Segovia.
The two cuppers (pictured at right) were roasting local coffee samples in an open frying pan on a propane burner, and getting excellent results.
