The colony of Nuevo Santander had its beginnings because Spanish officials were determined to further settle their northern borders in an effort to stop the English encroachments in the Caribbean.
Nuevo Santander was to extend from Tampico on the Pánuco River to the border of Texas at the Medina River (near San Antonio), later placed further south at the Nueces River.
Nuevo Santander had over ten times that number by 1790, and New Mexico with 20,289, was eight times the size of Texas population wise.
