 Improved Leadership and Self
A total of 25 youth leaders (12 males/13females) from Nukualofa youth organisations participated in the workshop.
The workshop was officially opened by Director of Education, Kulaheako (Mr Viliami Takau) at 9.30 am on Monday 17 March 2003 at the Basilica of St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church in downtown Nukualofa.
The workshop was a joint initiative between the SPC Pacific Action for Health Project hosted by the Tonga Family Health Association; the Tonga National Youth Congress; the Tonga Ministry of Education and the Pacific Youth Bureau.

Well we are checked out of the Vava'u Group in northern Tonga and will be leaving in a day or two for the Haapai Group in the middle and then down to the capital city of Nukualofa in the south of Tonga.
We should be in Nukualofa in about one to two weeks and will email when we arrive there.
Next mail drop will be for New Zealand and we will send that address from Nukualofa.

It was raining when the Aotea Roa II reached Nuku'alofa, capital of Tonga, but the sun came out to greet the Queen and the Duke as they stepped ashore.
The Queen's first official duty after landing at Nukualofa, Tonga, was to lay a wreath on the War Memorial.
Queen Salote of Tonga and her son, Crown Prince Tungi, waited on the mat-covered, flower-decorated wharf at Nukualofa to greet the Queen when she stepped ashore after flying from Fiji.

 International Games News April 2004
The South Pacific Mini Games have so far been hosted by: Honiara, Solomon Islands (1981), Rarotonga, Cook Islands (1985) Nukualofa, Tonga (1989), Port Vila, Vanuatu (1993), Pago Pago, American Samoa (1997) and Kingston, Norfolk Island (2001).
Participants in the games are: American Samoa, Cook Islands, Federated States of Micronesia, Fiji, Guam, Kiribati, New Caledonia, Niue, Norfolk Island, Northern Marianas, Palau, Papua New Guinea, French Polynesia, Tonga, Vanuatu, Wallis and Futuna and Western Samoa.
The South Pacific Games Council met in Palau, site of the 2005 South Pacific Mini Games, to review planning for those games.

Our concerns that Tonga might have gone the way of Fiji evaporated, though, when we learned that the International Dateline was still probably where we should stay in Nukualofa, even though the hotel, which is run by the government, apparently is not keen on renovating between coronations.
The capital, Nukualofa, with its low wooden buildings and arcades and unpaved streets, looked like the sort of place John Wayne might mosey into after a cattle drive, except that on the edge of town, facing the harbor, there was what appeared to be a large Victorian summer-house: the royal palace.
The presence of the International Dateline Hotel made Tonga the dream combination of a certain type of American traveler—an unspoiled place where you had your own bathroom.

Nuku'alofa is the capital of Tonga with a population of just 30,000.
The harbour wall along Vuna Road, where most of Nuku'alofa's accommodation is located, is good for a stroll and spotting the offshore islands if nothing else to do but the beach is of coarse coral and often littered but is OK for swimming.
A few pleasant cafes and restaurants in the town centre allow you to escape the drone and an internet cafe or bus stand may be the only reason to make a second visit.

 TONGA: Strikers reject new offer
A further offer was also rejected on August 4, and on August 5 a large meeting was convened in a public park in Nukualofa, opposite the parliament.
Tonga’s public servants, who have been on strike since July 22, rejected a new government pay offer on August 1, which fell well short of the 60-80% rises the workers are demanding.
