  Nukufetau Atoll, Tuvalu
Nukufetau is an island of the Tuvalu group.
Nukufetau has a population of approximately 700 people, although this number is reduced when school children leave for Funafuti.
We were anchored in either Nukufetau or Funafuti from end of December 2004 to end of March 2005 and in that time encountered rough storms (with winds gusting over 40 knots) which developed shortly after in cyclones.

I must here mention that the natives of De Peyster's Island (Nukufetau) caught all the fish they wanted in the smooth and spacious waters of the lagoon, and were not fond of venturing outside the barrier reef, except during the bonito season, or when the sea was very calm at night, to catch flying-fish.
As soon, however, as the young bonito appear, both eels and rock-cod change their normal habits, and entering the lagoons through the passages thereto, they take up their quarters in the deeper parts--places which are fringed by a labyrinthine border of coral forest, and are at most ten fathoms deep.
It is at this time that the natives of Nukufetau and some other islands have some glorious sport, for in addition to the huge eels and rock-cod many other deep-sea fish flock into the shallower lagoon waters--all in pursuit of the _atuli_--and all eager to take the hook.

My first battlesite viisted was Funafuti, in the former Ellice Islands, in November 1974, the first stop on a visit extending up the Ellice and into the Gilberts that involved layovers in Nukufetau (B-24 base in 1943), Nanomea, Tarawa, Makin, and Abemama.
It was quite an experience in itself to reach these sites, starting out with a flight from Fiji to Funafuti, then a trip on an inter-island ship the Nareau to Nukufetau and Nanomea in the Ellice (captain provided me with his launch for the day's stopover in each place), and finally to Tarawa.
