The Nullarbor Plain is the vast area of flat, almost treeless, arid or semi-arid country immediately north of the Great Australian Bight.
The Nullarbor Plain is thought to be a former seabed.
The line was entirely rebuilt in 1969, as part of a project to standardise the previously disparate rail gauges in the various states, and the first crossing of the Nullarbor on the new line reached Perth on 27 February 1970.

The Nullarbor Plain is the vast expanse of flat, almost treeless, arid or semi-arid country immediately north of the Great Australian Bight, stretching about 2000 km from east to west between Adelaide and Perth.
The name is derived from the Latin for "no trees".
The Nullarbor Plain also holds the record for the longest straight piece of tarred road surface in Australia (146.6 km) and the longest straight piece of railway line in the world (478 km).

At Fowler's Bay, Eyre decided to send some of the group back to Adelaide and to continue with a small group: his friends Baxter and Wylie, and the other 2 Aborigines.
There were no trees to shelter them along the Nullabor Plain and the heat was intense.
