To the mass of the Adams party the struggle still seemed to be only one between two wings of the same party, and the result of the election of 1828 showed which of the two seemed the better "republicans" to the country at large.
In South Carolina, nullification (see that title) had received its death-blow from the president's declared intention to usurp, as the nullifiers believed, the unconstitutional power to make war on a sovereign state; and the bitterness of this feeling was aggravated in the case of their leader, Calhoun, by a preliminary personal dispute with the president.
The nullifiers were thus ready and willing to become the allies of the national republicans; and it is asserted by Hammond that Clay's compromise tariff of 1833, which gave the nullifiers a road of retreat, was one consideration for the alliance.

The American party's commitment to the Union was in stark contrast, at least in Donelson's opinion, to that of the Democratic leadership, particularly Pierce.
The party platform, introduced at its March 1859 state convention, upheld the Union as the surest guaranty of the rights and interests of all sections of the country and resolved that agitation over the slavery issue led to no practical good to any portion of the country, and should, therefore, cease.
The party refused to espouse a platform, calling instead for simple adherence to the broad foundation of the Constitution, and the Union of the States, and the enforcement of the laws.

But the new party, as it campaigned for power in the '50's, contributed tirelessly to a critique of the South as a land and society both decadent and threatening.
One observer noted: "It was not an uncommon thing to hear people say--that one party was as good as another...Others, again, disgusted by the low tone of political life--the abuse and vulgarity in which it abounds...do not so much as cast their ballots." By now the national political system had been shattered.
In place of two national parties, whose very presence had helped hold an increasingly divided nation together, there existed an increasingly pro-Southern Democratic party, a declining Know-Nothing party, and a sectional Republican party that was on its way to becoming the most formidable political force in the nation.

Following the lead of Calhoun's biographer, Charles Wiltse, whose subtitles for his three-volume study were "nationalist," "nullifier," and "secessionist," many observers have highlighted the shifts in Calhoun's political thinking.
Calhoun feared party competition, according to Ford, because it required that parties court fringe elements (such as the abolitionists) in order to achieve majorities.
While the Democratic Party was dominant, southern Democrats had few meaningful connections to the national party, and within the region the political order relied as much on personality or factionalism as on any coherent Democratic organization.
