Justin Frankel - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-21)
Frankel sold Nullsoft to AOL in 1999 for $86 million.
Gnutella was a new peer-to-peer file-sharing system like the original Napster system, which was used by users to share their MP3 collections with everyone who ran a Napster client.
Since AOL was at the time merging with Time Warner, Gnutella seemed like a conflict of interest to Nullsoft's parent company, who knew that Time Warner was one of the parties who was taking legal action against Napster at the time.

Just as with Gnutella, Nullsoft released something that AOL pulled out but not before the code got into the wild.

Nullsoft, 1997-2004 - AOL kills off the last maverick tech company. By Paul Boutin
Not that you could really blame AOL for the mass layoffs—all of Nullsoft's projects were spitballs tossed at the honchos upstairs.
Before the AOL days, Nullsoft founder Justin Frankel and his team of whiz kids practically invented the MP3 craze when they rolled out their Winamp player and Shoutcast server.
With Nullsoft gone and Frankel spending his time building a special-effects computer for his electric guitar, the old Winamp/Gnutella gang probably won't get back together for one more hit.

You may recall that Nullsoft, a geeky and talented group of programmers from Arizona who conceived both the Winamp MP3 player and Shoutcast, was purchased last summer by AOL.
Justin Frankel, the wunderkind founder of Nullsoft and reticent icon of the geek world, is now estimated by the Wall Street Journal to be worth $70 million.
The Gnutella software and documentation mysteriously disappeared from Nullsoft's Web site on Tuesday; Pepper told News.com that the program was removed because the beta program was full (Slashdot fans had apparently deluged the site) and the software wasn't ready for public consumption.

Nullsoft released Winamp3 last year, offering an ambitious reworking of its popular MP3 player based on a homegrown programming language called Wasabi.
At the same time, lingering tensions between Nullsoft and its corporate parent have been rocky, with Nullsoft co-founder Justin Frankel recently publishing comments on his personal Web site that indicated he was mulling leaving the company after repeated clashes with management over his programming projects.
As Nullsoft struggles with the direction of Winamp, AOL is showing signs of cooperating more closely with Microsoft on digital media, having agreed a month ago to license the software giant's Windows Media software as part of a sweeping settlement of a private antitrust suit brought on behalf of its Netscape subsidiary.

Waste had been used internally to share files between AOL's San Francisco office, where Nullsoft is based, and its Dulles, Va., headquarters, according to Ian Rogers, a former founding member of Nullsoft.
Nullsoft has had its conflicts with AOL in the past, such as in 2000 when Frankel developed a music file-swapping technology called Gnutella.
