Great Britain road numbering scheme - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
With the advent of the motor car and the huge expansion in the numbers and standards of roads, as well as the introduction of a national Highway Code, a coherent numbering scheme was developed, which is still in use in Great Britain today.
It was numbered uniquely to give this road perceived importance - it was already known that the A5 road needed no such motorway bypass as this was already the job of the M1.
Shorter motorways typically take their numbers from a parent motorway in violation of the zone system, explaning the apparantly anomalous numbers of the M48 and M49 motorways as spurs of the M4, and M271 and M275 motorways as thoser of the M27.

 The SSN Numbering Scheme
The Area Number is assigned by the geographical region.
Generally, numbers were assigned beginning in the northeast and moving westward.
The numbering scheme was designed in 1936 (before computers) to make it easier for SSA to store the applications in our files in Baltimore since the files were organized by regions as well as alphabetically.

The key to the code is to add 90 to the number; the result shows the number of C, H, and F atoms.
The numbering scheme above does not give a direct number for the number of Cl atoms, but that can be calculated.

Specifically, it is necessary to indicate how the numbering scheme is expressed: as alphabetics or numerics; upper, lower, or no case; script used or type of numeral.
It was requested that LC submit a new proposal to allow for the ability to indicate script, to deal with an alphanumeric numbering scheme and to consider having the data in a fixed length.
This position is applicable if a numbering scheme is conveyed as alphas and applies both to those coded in the previous position as "b" or to Roman numerals.

 The National Numbering Scheme
They argued that number changes are an acceptable feature of the management of numbering schemes provided that there is sufficient notice of change and that migration is handled sensitively.
Given that the average "life" of a mobile number is currently around 2.5 years and that new allocations from 1997 will be of 07 numbers, a minority of mobile customers should have to have "forced" moves; the usual method of migration will be by normal customer churn.
The Numbering Condition contained in those individual licences requires the licensee to adopt a Numbering Plan which allocates numbers in accordance with the UK Numbering Scheme, and to comply with Oftel's Numbering Conventions.

 Numbering Scheme
Sweden uses a geographical numbering scheme with area codes of the form 08 for greater Stockholm, 0xx for major cities and very densely populated areas such as Skåne (Scania) and 0xxx for country side and smaller cities.
The personal numbers in 0701 are to be moved to 075 in November 1997, thus increasing numbering space tenfold.
Since number portability is of such a great importance to competition and Sweden never having promoted it, such as has been done in Britain, it is most likely that geographical numbers will be made portable - question is when and at what cost to the new carriers.

The SSN Numbering Scheme--Debunking a myth
Apparently due to the fact that the middle digits of the SSN are referred to as the "group number," some people have misconstrued this to mean that the "group number" refers to racial groupings.
As should be clear from the explanation of the SSN numbering scheme, the "group number" refers only to the numerical groups 01-99.
So, for example, for area numbers starting with 527 there would be 98 subgroups, one for every number starting with 527-01, and one for every number starting with 527-02, and so on.

tech-kern: NetBSD Version Numbering Scheme Changes   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-21)
Hello, A few months ago the NetBSD Core Team ratified the proposed changes to the NetBSD version numbering scheme: From now on, we'll be using the major version number to indicate a major release and the minor version number to indicate a minor release.
Patches to 2.0 will be numbered 2.1, 2.2, etc. and patches to 3.0 will be 3.1, 3.2, etc. As some of you have noticed, we will need to do something about NetBSD-current versions before we branch to NetBSD 3.0, otherwise the version of -current (2.0H) will be behind the 3.0 release branch.
Under this scheme, NetBSD-current will be indicated by having 99 as the minor release number, and using the patchlevel to indicate different API levels within current.

Snapshots made during the feature freeze are called "release candidates," and are numbered by the snapshot number minus 900.

 Definition of National Numbering Scheme
The UK telephone numbering plan, also known as the National Numbering Plan, is regulated by the Office of Communications (Ofcom), which replaced the Office of Telecommunications (Oftel) in 2003.
For example Aylesbury was given the STD code 0296, where the letter A can be found on the number 2, the letter Y on the number 9 and the letter L on the number 6.
This is similar to the use of fictitious telephone numbers in the United States with the digits '555'.

INTEL Corp. will implement in the Philippines a new numbering scheme for its processors starting May as part of the company's major move to re-identify their processors away from the traditional clock-speed metric.
Banaag said the new scheme allows customers to have a better and more informed approach on buying a new computer, which he said Intel is promoting to eventually become a fully multimedia center.
According to Banaag, the new scheme still keeps the clock-speed metric, but will be associated firmly with the processor's L2 cache and the front side bus, two other features of the processor that have significant effects on a chip's overall performance.
