Optical fiber - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Optical fibers are commonly used in telecommunication systems, as well as in illumination, sensors, and imaging optics.
An optical amplifier is typically made by doping a length of fiber with the rare-earth mineral erbium, and pumping it with light from a laser with a shorter wavelength than the communications signal (typically 980 nm).
Fiber with a core diameter narrower than a few wavelengths of the light carried, is analyzed as an electromagnetic structure, by solution of Maxwell's equations, as reduced to the electromagnetic wave equation.

Numerical aperture - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
This refers to the numerical aperture with respect to the extreme exit angle of a ray emerging from a fiber in which equilibrium mode distribution has been established.
In optics, the numerical aperture (NA) of an optical system is a dimensionless number that characterizes the range of angles over which the system can accept or emit light.
Numerical aperture is a measure of the diameter of the aperture compared to the focal length.

 Fiber Optical Communications
The optical fiber causes dispersion, and the term chromatic dispersion is used to relate the spectral width of the source to the properties of the fiber.
Optical amplifiers radically changed the landscape of fiber systems, and have now shifted the focus of attention to capacity (that is, bit rate).
Notice the optical amplifier is an optical repeater, and not a regenerator that involves conversion to the electronic domain for pulse reshaping and retiming.

Optical Fiber Amplifiers for Telecommunication Systems
In this case it is convenient to adopt an intermediate silica fiber having optical characteristics as similar as possible to those of the active fiber, to favor low-loss splicing between the transmission line and the amplifier.
Active media for OFAs are rare-earth elements (viz., a group of elements in the Mendeleiev periodic table having similar chemical properties, e.g., erbium, praseodymium, thulium, neodymium, etc.) which are used as dopants in the glass matrix of an optical fiber.
Fiber amplifiers are used as compensators for branching, propagation, and splicing optical losses in both single-channel and multichannel configurations, in digital as well as analog systems.

Apparatus for improving the numerical aperture at the input of a fiber optics device - Patent 4654532
In other words, the light beam traversing the fiber is angularly compressed by the taper of the medium in which it is confined; the ratio of the diameters of the large and small portions of the tapered fiber is the exact inverse of the ratio of numerical apertures.
The excitation radiation is angularly compressed from the input end of the fiber to the coated portion by the taper of the fiber, thereby increasing the numerical aperture considerably.
Fiber 20 is adapted to propagate along its length, by multiple total internal relection, optical excitation radiation entering entrance face 22 within a conical acceptance angle (B) substantially symmetric with the long axis of the fiber and defined hereinbefore, as well known to those skilled in the fiber optics art, in equation (1).

 Single-mode optical fiber - Patent 4306767
This invention relates to a single-mode optical fiber which is used in a wavelength band range of 1.2 to 1.8.mu.m for optical telecommunication.
The conventional single-mode optical fiber made by the aforementioned process was heretofore made for that use in a wavelength range of 0.8 to 0.9.mu.m of semiconductor laser diode (LD) and incorporated with a core of pure SiO.sub.2 glass and a cladding of B.sub.2 O.sub.3 -SiO.sub.2 glass.
Generally, an optical fiber of this type is produced by drawing preformed rods produced by a modified chemical vapor deposition process (MCVD) for the purpose of obtaining the fiber of low transmission loss and high transmission capacity.
