For instance, the Power Series and Trigonometric Series programs may be used to study the solutions found by the programs of the Differential Equations collection to find integrals, roots, maxima and minima, derivatives.
Even the multivariable series produced by the Approximation and Interpolation collection can be studied by support programs to compute multiple integrals, maxima and minima, partial derivatives.

Numerical analysis is that branch of appliedmathematics which studies the methods and algorithms to find (approximate)numerical solutions to various mathematical problems, using a finite sequence of arithmetic and logical operations.
Theanalogous concept for the numerical algorithm for solving the problem is that of numerical stability : an algorithm for solving a well-conditioned problem is numerically stable if theresult of the algorithm changes only a small amount if the data change a little.
Numerical analysis is also concerned with computing (in an approximate way) the solution of differential equations, both ordinary differential equations and partial differential equations.

Pi - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The approximations 22/7 and 355/113, with 3 and 7 significant figures respectively, are obtained from the simple continued fraction expansion of π.
These approximations have so many digits that they are no longer of any practical use, except for testing new supercomputers and (obviously) for establishing new π calculation records.
Karl Popper conjectured that Plato knew this expression, and that he believed it to be exactly π; and that this is responsible for some of Plato's confidence in the omnicompetence of mathematical geometry, and his repeated discussion of right triangles which are either isosceles or halves of equilateral triangles.

It can be that we have no way to know the exact value, for example if we solve an equation by plotting a graph on a piece of paper and read the value from the x-axis, then we get an approximation of the exact value.
In every approximation we introduce an error by definition, since we are not using the correct value.

Results are presented involving rediscovery of known approximations for Harmonic numbers and discovery of rational polynomial approximations for functions of one or more variables, the latter of which are compared to Pade approximations obtained through a symbolic mathematics package.
We present results involving rediscovery of known approximations for Harmonic numbers, discovery of rational polynomial approximations for functions of one or more variables, and refinement of existing approximations through both approximation of their error function and incorporation of the approximation as a program tree in the initial GP population.
We find that approximations evolved by GP can be superior to Pade approximations given certain tradeoffs between approximation cost and accuracy, and that GP is able to evolve approximations in circumstances where the Pade approximation technique cannot be applied.

This is a numerical analysis book written from a mathematician's point of view, and requires from the reader a good background in calculus and linear algebra.
The book introduces modern approximation techniques and explains how, why and when these techniques are expected to work, and allows the reader to understand why one algorithm works better than other for a given problem.
It is not a mere numerical methods cookbook, but a text that analyzes and applies the numerical methods instead.

 65: Numerical analysis
In many problems this implies producing a sequence of approximations; thus the questions involve the rate of convergence, the accuracy (or even validity) of the answer, and the completeness of the response.
Numerical solutions to differential equations require the determination not of a few numbers but of an entire function; in particular, convergence must be judged by some global criterion.
Applications of numerical analysis occur throughout the fields of applied (numerical) mathematics, in particular in the fields of physics (sections 70-86).
