Numinous - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Numinous (/ˈnuːmənəs/ or /ˈnjuːmənəs/) is a term coined by Rudolf Otto to describe that which is wholly other.
The numinous is the mysterium tremendum that leads in different cases to belief in deities, the supernatural, the sacred, the holy, and the transcendent.
Etymologically, it comes from the Latin word numen, which originally and literally meant "nodding", but was associated with meanings of "command" or "divine majesty".

 Numinosity
The experience of the numinous may be influenced by the contents of the unconscious but it seems superficial to reduce so many diverse accounts of numinosity to mere regression.
Freud saw the numinous in terms of recalling a unified "oceanic bliss" which everyone apparently felt within the mother's womb.
This emphasis on the numinous arguably separates religion from mere social movements such as Marxism and the often reductive claims of postmodernism.

 Otto and the Numinous
For example, fear does not become dread in response to the numinous; rather, we cease to feel ordinary fear and move into an entirely different feeling, a dread that is aroused by intimations of the numinous or the actual experience of the numinous.
Because of these similarities, the sublime may stimulate the capacity to perceive the numinous, and there is a tendency for the sublime to pass over into the numinous and for the numinous to pass over into the sublime.
Otto identifies portrayals of darkness and silence as a means of presenting the numinous; he stresses that the darkness must contrast with a flickering or dying light, the semidarkness creating a "mystical" effect.

David Myatt: The Numinous Way of Life
In addition, the ethics of The Numinous Way - which establish what is right, and wrong and from which we must derive our laws - are totally different from the ethics of Islam, based as the ethics of The Numinous Way are upon personal honour, empathy.
In contrast, The Numinous Way seeks to establish small, rural, folkish communities, believing that the concepts of The State, and The Nation, are immoral - a denial of the liberty, the freedom, that honour and only honour creates.
First, that The Numinous Way, as I have said and written several times in the past few years, is the esoteric essence of my evolutionary National-Socialism: the foundation upon which all honourable folkish ways, including National-Socialism, are built.

I have chosen the name "numinous" for this web-site, because I hope that it will be just that…… It is my firm belief that there is an ABSOLUTE truth in this universe and that nothing is relative to our point of view, excepting for our own emotion.
I wish to re-awaken the human awareness of the numinous because without a conscious sense of the value inherent in every part of the universe, we cease to have value.
If an individual lives for eternity, then the individual life has far more value than the value of a particular state or culture because it's life would far outlive that of a social arrangement - even one life sacrificed on the altar of "for the good of society" would be abominable.

The Kant-Friesian Theory of Religion and Religious Value
The notion of the sacred or the numinous as a category for understanding religion was substantially launched by Rudolf Otto (1869-1937) in his classic Idea of the Holy (Das Heilige) in 1917.
Unassociated with any objects, the sense of the numinous is a feeling of "daemonic dread," a sense of the uncanny, frightful, eerie, weird, or supernatural.
In terms of space, this means that the creation of the cosmos, which is accomplished by numinous beings (but recapitulated in the founding rituals of cities, buildings, tombs, etc.), sets it off as true existence from the chaos which preexisted it and which remains, perhaps, outside its boundaries.

Numinous took the stage last and performed to the best of their ability in front of this non-hip-hop crowd, and surprisingly they got the loudest applause and won the contest that day. After the great response from the crowd they went on to do another "Battle of the Bands" and won that one as well.
Finally Numinous was starting to gain a little respect in their hometown and in July of 2001 they were asked to host their own show which was to be a "Fan Appreciation Night" this time Numinous had groups opening up for them, which was different.

OTTO'S 'IDEA OF THE HOLY': SUMMARY
He presents the tremendum component of the numinous that is being experienced as comprising three elements: awfulness (inspiring awe, a sort of profound unease), overpoweringness (that which, among other things, inspires a feeling of humility), energy (creating an impression of immense vigour).
Also worthy of attention is Otto's effort in his chapters on the numinous in the Old Testament, in the New Testament and in Luther to emphasise that the rise of the rational in the Judeo-Christian tradition did not eliminate the non-rational numinous.
The general idea seems to be that it is basically a matter of the cumulative effect of the interactions between the human predisposition to religion and the contingent events of human history (somewhat like the interactions between nature and nurture, heredity and environment in the development of human individuals, one might suppose).

outline of Otto's concept of "The Numinous"
The Numinous, for Otto, is both a category of feeling and a category of Being, but it will be easier to understand if you first think of it as primarily a feeling that he is describing, i.e.,the feeling of the Numinous.
The Numinous is characterized by two main elements, I. the sense of creatureliness, and II.
Otto then focuses on trying to articulate what is meant by that sense of tremendous mystery, or "Mysterium Tremendum." He sees it as having three main elements: A. the element of tremendousness ("tremendum"), B. the element of mysteriousness ("mysterium"), and C. the element of fascination ("fascinans").

Otto was attracted to focus on this unique numinous feeling by at least two of his predecessors - Schleiermacher for his discovery of sensus numinus on the basis of which he arrived at his definition of religion as 'feeling of absolute dependence,'[18] and Fries for his notion of 'ahndung'.[19] In Otto's words:
It may be noted here that in his attempt to describe and discuss the incommensurable and inexpressible ineffable numinous, Otto resorts to analogical, metaphorical and symbolic methods of description by focusing on the feelings.
