Nunatsiavut is an area claimed by the Inuit in Canada (not to be confused with the territory Nunavut).

The Nunatsiavut dialect (Nunatsiavummiutut, or often in government documents Labradorimiutut) was once spoken across northern Labrador.
Although Nunatsiavut claims over 4,000 inhabitants of Inuit descent, only 550 reported Inuktitut to be their mother tongue in the 2001 census, mostly in the town of Nain.
Nunatsiavut also had a separate dialect reputedly much closer to western Inuktitut dialects, spoken in the area around Rigolet.

Harry Borlase, a Canadian Studies student at Mount Allison University and resident of Goose Bay, NL, is the recipient of a Canadian Northern Studies Trust Northern Resident Award, valued at $5,000, from the Association of Canadian Universities for Northern Studies (ACUNS).
His research will attempt to explore the foundations of the land claim agreement and how it relates to the needs of the Labrador Inuit, looking in particular at how the treaty acknowledges Inuit concerns for cultural protection in language and education.
