  Building Scientific Capacity: The Nunavik Research Center
The Nunavik Research Center in Kuujjuaq is an example of the type of research facility, including building, equipment and staff expertise, now being developed in the north by Inuit communities and organizations.
Although the Nunavik Research Center was not part of the original DIAND program, major funding provided by Makivik Corporation has recently been supplemented by DIAND for the purchase of new scientific equipment and laboratory facilities.
In conjunction with the Nunavik Board of Health, the data can be used to advise people about the benefits and risks of eating country foods.

Although Nunavik is a vast region, it is sparsely populated.
Kuujjuaq (Inuktitut for "big river"), with its population of 2 000, is located directly at the tree line, between taiga and tundra, an eroded region where humans, fauna and flora have adapted and now flourish under the harsh climatic conditions.
The language most commonly spoken in Nunavik is inuktitut but the language of practice is essentially English due to the federal government's long presence in administrative matters.

However, the governments were negligent in the manner in which they approached what they considered to be a problem with Qimmiit in Nunavik communities and negligent in the devise and implementation of their solutions.
Although Nunavik has been part of the territory of Quebec since the coming into force of the Québec Boundaries Extension Act of 1912, the federal government administered this portion of the province exclusively from the time it became active in northern Canada, around the end of the Second World War, until the 1960s.
