Nunchaku - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The popular belief is that the nunchaku was originally a short flail used to thresh rice (separate the grain from the husk).
Nevertheless, the nunchaku's impressive motion in use and perceived lethality contributed to its increasing popularity, peaking in the 1980s, perhaps due to its (unfounded) association with ninja during the 1980s ninja craze.
Nunchaku literally means "twin (or identical) sections" - a "chaku" being a unit of measurement, roughly equal to one section of bamboo.

A nunchaku (aka also nunchucks or karate stick; 雙節棍 in Chinese; ヌンチャク; in Japanese) is a martial arts weapon consisting of two sticks connected at their ends with a short chain or thong.
Also referred to as a rice flail[?], the nunchaku are often explained as a ancient tool used by farmers for threshing rice.
The nunchaku were made popular mostly due to their use by Bruce Lee in a scene from his film Enter the Dragon.

Nunchaku today - Alex Levitas' NUNCHAKU and NUNCHAKU-DO site
It uses specially build plastic nunchaku instead of the usual police baton (nightstick) or the PR-24 (side-handle baton) as a primary control device for situations when the usage of a gun is unjustified.
The arguments in the plastic nunchaku's favour are its small size (12 inches), which makes it easier to conceal, and to carry comfortably; its "ease-of-use", and the ability to apply various non-lethal but effective techniques.
The most realistic nunchaku fighting scene which I have seen was the backyard scene from Bruce Lee's "Return of the Dragon" (however the Bruce Lee and Dan Inosanto duel in the "Game of Death" - nunchaku versus nunchaku - was not so good, in my opinion).

GRAPPLING WITH THE NUNCHAKU   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-23)
One final concept of the Nunchaku, which has a Chinese connection to it, is that it was a hanging attachment to a staff used to carry water buckets on.
Yet if the name Nunchaku is the original name of the weapon, then since it's meaning is flail, it is most probable that it was a rice flail, which tends to be the oldest and most believed story.
The Nunchaku can be used with the sticks held together, with the same kind of strikes used by a Hanbo, half stick, or Keibo, police stick, which are less dangerous than those delivered with the free swinging movement.

 Nunchaku Nunchucks
Nunchaku - Originally this was a wooden flail used to crush rice and consisted of two unequal lengths of hardwood connected by a cord made of horse hair.
The modern Nunchaku have octagonal (hakkakukei) or round (maru-gata) wooden handles of equal length connected by a length of rope or chain.
The han-kei nunchaku, with the circumference of the handles halved, is designed for easier carrying and concealment, as both handles fit together smoothly The Nunchaku can be wielded with tremendous velocity in striking and are also valuable in parrying attacks from other weapons.

 Nunchaku - China-related Topics NU-NZ - China-Related Topics
The nunchaku were made popular in the Western countriesWest mostly due to their use by Bruce Lee in a scene from his film Enter the Dragon (though he had actually first used nunchaku in Fist of Fury), in which he demonstrates Eskrima flail techniques.
Also referred to as a rice flail or karate stick, the nunchaku are often explained as an ancient tool used by farmers for threshing rice, it is uncertain whether the nunchaku were used in their exact form for this purpose, as the equal length of the sticks would make rice flailing impractical.
For wooden nunchaku it is advisable (although not strictly necessary) to clean the nunchaku with a cloth moistened in olive oil, camellia oil or any other plant oil for easier grip and this also prevents fading of the original color (because it puts a coating layer where the varnish disappeared).

While the nunchaku were not effective against longer weapons such as the staff, they were quite effective for fighting against an opponent armed with a knife or one that was unarmed.
Today the nunchaku is very popular and is used in many of the newer martial art forms.

Since September 1974, the possession of nunchaku, a martial-arts weapon consisting of two hardwood sticks connected by a cord, rope or chain, has been defined as a crime in the State of New York.
The mere possession of nunchaku within one’s own home for peaceful use in martial-arts practice by a person with no criminal record is classified as a misdemeanor that may carry up to a one-year prison sentence.
The draconian nature of these laws is made all the more ironic by virtue of the historical fact that the nunchaku, which was originally an agricultural implement, was adapted for use as a weapon by the People of Okinawa after oppressive governments disarmed them, making it illegal to possess a sword or other weapon.
