 NURBS - Definition of NURBS
Development of NURBS (actually the Bézier curve) began in the 1950s by engineers who were in need of a mathematically exact representation of freeform surfaces like those used for car bodies and ship hulls, which could be exactly reproduced whenever technically needed.
NURBS curves and surfaces are generalizations of both B-splines and Bézier curves and surfaces, the primary difference being the weighting of the control points which makes NURBS curves rational (non-rational B-splines are a special case of rational B-splines).
More recent versions of NURBS software (e.g., Alias Maya and Rhinoceros 3D) allow for interactive editing of knot positions, but this is significantly less intuitive than the editing of control points.

Judging by the robustness of the nurbs tools in there already, I think it's a safe bet that the trims and projected curve tools will be a lot more useable than in 3.x - after all, that was the main reason for switching from their previous vurbs library to Imageware's.
I'm glad to hear that the nurbs trim tools will be featured in upcoming releases of XSI, but please Soft make sure they work well this time around.
It would also be great if when extracting the trim curve, you don't have to have the nurbs curve set-up set so that a million and one points are needed on the extracted curve to maintain accuracy.

With the GE Fanuc NURBS Interpolation Function, the CAM process passes the original CAD "Control Points", "Weights", and "Knots" required to define the NURBS curve directly to the control in the "G Code" format.
In the past, NURBS data has been sent from the CAD system to a CAM process which would post-process the CAD NURBS data into small linear segments and create a "G-Code" Linear Interpolation Part Program for the CNC.
Representing the NURBS curve with small linear segments in the CAM processor led to decreased accuracy.

Nurbs can be activated when ever you click on it for editing.
I think one reason had to do with nurbs being one side objects like in LW and the polys were double sided.

Move the curve so that it is sitting in front of the sphere in the side view.
One way to add more divisions to a NURBS surface and to have more CVs to model with is to insert isoparms.
At some point in modeling, it may become necessary to rebuild a surface because you either have too many isoparms or the surface is getting out of control or you just want to make the model a little lighter.

Yes, we all now NURBS tools in Blender are nothing more than a toy.
It was a distraction, in the late 90s to use NURBS, and many were trying to model stuff like Pixar, when pixar was using subdivision surfaces..
NURBS really only serve as a precise surface type that is easy to model, but useful only as a modelling tool than as the end result..

My judgement that the curves are of order 3 (degree two) was based on the fact that when you use the 'draw cvs' curve tool, the curve appears after 3 control points.
From my understanding of nurbs if the curve is of degree 3, then you need at least 4 control points to have the curve show.
I've recently made a small program that drew nurbs curves and I'll add simple calculating of nurbs surfaces.

Although, it trims nurbs, it still has the triangulated "look", and won't unfold as one surface.
When controls are dropped on a nurbs surface, it reverts to a mesh that looks exactly like the grey "facetted" representation in nurbs form.

It offers a lot of NURBS manipulator and also has code for the approximation of scattered data points with Multilevel B-Spline Approximation.
I'm also trying to create contacts between the different authors of NURBS related libraries, as long as they don't mind the terms of the LGPL.
