The Nurse Aide Registry keeps track of those individuals who have met written and skills test criteria to be certified for employment in long-term care settings, usually nursing homes.
The registry also maintains records of those nurse aides who have had a finding of abuse, neglect or misappropriation of property against them.
The most significant achievement for this area during FY 2002 was giving facilities or any individual the ability to inquire on the status of a state tested nurse aide by accessing the registry through the internet.

 Nebraska HHS System: Nurse Aide
Nurse aides who work in licensed nursing homes that are not medicare or medicaid certified must have completed a state approved 75 hour nurse aide course and competency evaluation.
Nurse aides that are employed outside of these types of facilities, who meet the requirements may request to be placed on the registry, but registry placement is not required.
An individual who has performed nurse aide duties for monetary compensation that was not reported to the Registry may submit an Employment Verification Form which is a notarized statement from the employer that verifies the name and address of the employer, dates of employment, and that nurse aide duties were performed.

 Nurse Aide Registry, Competency Testing Services
Federal regulations require a nurse aide to work at least eight hours in a 24-month period, in a paid position providing hands-on care under the supervision of an RN or LPN, to maintain eligibility to work in a federally certified nursing home, intermediate care facility for persons with mental retardation, home health agency or hospice.
Nurse aides working in one of these federally certified facilities should complete the Renewal form and have it signed by their employer, to verify the aides’ most recent employment.
Nurse aides and/or health care employers are encouraged to keep a copy of their completed Renewal form and to send the form to Promissor via certified mail.

After one questionable incident with a regular staff nurse, I was expelled from the hospital and all of the other hospitals in that chain.
If a DNR is being requested for a minor incident or personality conflict, the registry and hospital administrative staff could investigate further and try to work out a better solution, such as the registry nurse being assigned to a different shift or unit.
If the facts reveal that the registry nurse needs further skills to be effective on a certain unit, the registry should recommend education or inservices prior to re-evaluating the DNR.
