Nurseryfish have many unusual skeletal modifications that were examined by CT scans and dissection.
Collection of nurseryfish larvae in plankton samples revealed that the spawning season coincides with the “dry season” from April to November.  The monsoon season brings heavy flooding to the area from December to March.
Adult nurseryfish stomach contents included prawns, isopods, and small fishes.  Further laboratory studies on preserved specimens are underway to examine ovarian activity and age and growth based on ear stones.

The nurseryfishes or forehead brooders are a family (Kurtidae) of fish that are notable for carrying their egg clusters on hooks protruding from the forehead (supraoccipital) of the males.
The nurseryfish, Kurtus gulliveria (Castelnau, 1878), occurs in mangrove swamps, estuaries and slow-moving turbid rivers of Australia and New Guinea.
The Indian hump head, Kurtus indicus (Bloch, 1786) is found in marine waters from India's Coromandel Coast to Borneo.

 The effects of spatial and temporal factors on the abundance of seven key finfish species along south-western Australia.
Eggs and larvae of nurseryfish, Kurtus gulliveri, one of the two know species of the Kurtidae, are described and illustrated for the first time using material collected in two rivers of Australia's Northern Territory.
Nurseryfish are unique in that males carry a cluster of fertilised eggs on a bony hook projecting from their foreheads.
No brooding males were captured during this study, although one partial egg cluster was found adjacent to a male caught in a gill net.

Robyn Williams: Because you’re there to look out for nurseryfish and I’ve got a couple of specimens in front of me, sadly deceased, and they are wonderfully silvery things.
The nurseryfish the instant you catch it is a gorgeous fish, it has this almost neon violet wash over it’s dorsel and ventral surfaces, it’s just brilliant and there’s a little bit of brown up on the lateral portion between top and bottom.
We got little tiny things from 5 mm to maybe 25 mm and there are several size classes, indicating to me that spawning has taken place several times over a several week period.
