Since its inception, the Centre, under the direction of its founder Arlee Hoyt McGee, has educated both nurses and the public on nursing history, has initiated individual and joint projects to promote nursing history, and has been involved with a variety of nursing research projects.

The white heart was officially launched as a universal symbol for nursing in 1999, on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the International Council of Nurses.
White was selected because it brings together all colours, demonstrating nursing’s acceptance of all people.
All proceeds from sales of the White Heart pin will go to ICN's Florence Nightingale International Foundation in support of the Girl Child project.
